Evolutionary affinities and morphological characterization of the enigmatic Zonocotyle bicaecata (Trematoda: Paramphistomoidea: Zonocotylidae) from the Upper Paran á River basin
Syst Parasitol. 2024 Apr 18;101(3):30. doi: 10.1007/s11230-024-10158-z.ABSTRACTNeotropical fish amphistomes represent a highly diverse group within the Paramphistomoidea, with wide distribution across major South American hydrological drainages. However, the limited molecular characterization of these taxa has impeded a comprehensive assessment of their evolutionary relationships and the systematic relevance of morphological features in classification schemes. Our study, based on the critical evaluation of the type material of both nominal species of Zonocotyle (type genus of the monotypic Zonocotylidae), and newly collect...

Characterization of diarrheagenic Escherichia coli from different cattle production systems in Brazil
This study aimed to characterize the distribution of DEC [Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC), enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC), enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), and enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC)] from extensive and intensive cattle production systems in Brazil. Samples (n = 919) were collected from animal feces (n = 200), carcasses (n = 600), meat cuts (n = 90), employee feces (n = 9), and slaughterhouse water (n = 20). Virulence genes were detected by PCR in 10% of animal samples (94/919), with STEC (n = 81) as the higher prevalence, followed by EIEC (n = 8), and lastly EPEC (n = 5). Anim...

Enterotoxigenic Staphylococcus aureus in Brazilian artisanal cheeses: Occurrence, counts, phenotypic and genotypic profiles
Food Microbiol. 2024 Aug;121:104531. doi: 10.1016/j.fm.2024.104531. Epub 2024 Apr 3.ABSTRACTThe present study aimed to assess the occurrence and counts of Staphylococcus aureus in Brazilian artisanal cheeses (BAC) produced in five regions of Brazil: Coalho and Manteiga (Northeast region); Colonial and Serrano (South); Caipira (Central-West); Marajó (North); and Minas Artisanal cheeses, from Araxá, Campos das Vertentes, Cerrado, Serro and Canastra microregions (Southeast). The resistance to chlorine-based sanitizers, ability to attach to stainless steel surfaces, and antibiogram profile of a large set of S. aureus strains...

The association between schizophrenia and increased COVID-19 mortality in a cohort of over 2 million people in Brazil
CONCLUSIONS: Patients diagnosed with schizophrenia have a greater likelihood of COVID-19- related death than those without mental health conditions. These findings underscore the significant effect of serious mental disorders on COVID-19 mortality.PMID:38635950 | DOI:10.47626/1516-4446-2024-3540 (Source: Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria)

Brazilian Psychiatric Association Consensus on the physical structure and ideal team for psychiatric emergencies services
CONCLUSION: These standardized models need to be available to public health managers so that they can guide the installation of new services and adjust the existing ones, always looking for improvement. GlycA Levels Independently Predict Coronary Artery Calcium Incidence and Progression in the ELSA-Brasil Cohort (Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health)
Am J Cardiol. 2024 Apr 16:S0002-9149(24)00265-0. doi: 10.1016/j.amjcard.2024.03.041. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease. Coronary artery calcium (CAC) is a marker of atherosclerotic disease events and mortality risk. Elevated GlycA, an emerging marker of inflammation, is associated with a higher risk for coronary artery disease (CAD). However, there is conflicting evidence on whether GlycA predicts subclinical CAD progression. We hypothesized that GlycA can predict subclinical CAC incidence/progression in healthy individuals. We included 2,690 ELSA-Brasil cohort participants without ca...

Pistol shooting performance under pressure: Longitudinal changes in gaze behavior of male and female Army cadets
Hum Mov Sci. 2024 Apr 16;95:103217. doi: 10.1016/j.humov.2024.103217. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe found evidence that Army cadets improved their gaze behavior and performance across time under high and low pressure in a shooting task. The purpose of the study was to determine if male and female cadets developed an optimal quiet eye (QE) onset, a longer QE duration, and decreased pupil diameter variability (PDV) over time under low (LP) and high pressure (HP) conditions. The study was carried out over four sessions, with intervals of 4.5 months. During each session, 16 men and 12 women, first-year cadets of The Brazili...

Asthma patients' and physicians' perspectives on the burden and management of asthma: post-hoc analysis of APPaRENT 1 and 2 to assess predictors of treatment adherence
CONCLUSIONS: Results revealed an important disconnect between patient and physician treatment goals and treatment adherence, suggesting that strategies for improving patient adherence to maintenance medication are needed, focusing on younger patients with milder disease. High reliever use despite good adherence may indicate poor disease control. Personalised care considering patient characteristics alongside physician training in motivational communication and shared decision-making could improve patient management and outcomes.PMID:38636683 | DOI:10.1016/j.rmed.2024.107637 (Source: Respiratory Care)

Preparing Pharmacists for the Digital Age: How Pharmacy Courses are Adapting to Challenges and Opportunities
CONCLUSION: U.S. pharmacy programs are further developed by providing specialized, high-quality digital health education with extensive coursework, reflecting a curriculum in tune with digital advancements. This stands in stark contrast to Brazilian programs, which show a need for comprehensive curriculum revision to effectively prepare pharmacists for the digital age. This study underscores the urgency for global pharmacy education reform, aligning it with the rapid evolution of digital health.PMID:38636780 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajpe.2024.100700 (Source: American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education)
