Ursodeoxycholic acid loaded dual-modified graphene oxide nanocomposite alleviates cholestatic liver injury through inhibiting hepatocyte apoptosis
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2024 Apr 7;238:113904. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2024.113904. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUrsodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is the preferred treatment for various types of cholestasis, however, its effectiveness is limited because of its insolubility in water. We used polyethylene glycol (PEG) and cationic polymer polyethylenimine (PEI) to double-modify graphite oxide (PPG) as a drug delivery system. UDCA was successfully loaded onto PPG through intermolecular interactions to form UDCA-PPG nanoparticles. UDCA-PPG nanoparticles not only improve the solubility and dispersibility of UDCA, but also hav...

Long-term safety of lanthanum carbonate in the real word: a 19-year disproportionality analysis from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System
CONCLUSIONS: This study affirms lanthanum carbonate's long-term safety for reducing elevated blood phosphorus levels. While gastrointestinal disorders were common, attention must focus on emerging AEs, particularly stress, especially in elderly patients.PMID:38602862 | DOI:10.1080/14740338.2024.2343014 (Source: Expert Opinion on Drug Safety)

Antimicrobial and Probiotic Potential of Lactobacilli Associated with Traditional Fermented Beverages
In this study, we investigated the antimicrobial and probiotic potential of lactobacilli isolated from fermented beverages produced traditionally by ethnic groups in Northeast India. Out of thirty Lactobacilli, fifteen exhibited strong antimicrobial activity against Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter aerogenes with significant anti-biofilm and anti-quorum sensing activity. These isolates also showed characteristics associated with probiotic properties, such as tolerance to low pH and bile salts, survival in the gastric tract,...

Association between obesity and cancer risk in HIV-infected Asians
CONCLUSIONS: Obesity, which is one of the important health concerns in HIV management, was associated with an increased risk of non-AIDS-defining cancer but not AIDS-defining cancer.PMID:38597513 | DOI:10.1097/QAD.0000000000003904 (Source: Cancer Control)

Preliminary exploration of animal models of congenital choledochal cysts
CONCLUSION: The model of partial ligation of the bile duct of juvenile rats could morphologically simulate the cystic or fusiform CC, which may contribute to investigating the pathogenesis of CC.PMID:38596496 | PMC:PMC11000093 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v30.i10.1420 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology : WJG)

Current considerations on intraductal papillary neoplasms of the bile duct and pancreatic duct
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Mar 14;30(10):1461-1465. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i10.1461.ABSTRACTPancreatobiliary intraductal papillary neoplasms (IPNs) represent precursors of pancreatic cancer or bile duct cholangiocarcinoma that can be detected and treated. Despite advances in diagnostic methods, identifying these premalignant lesions is still challenging for treatment providers. Modern imaging, biomarkers and molecular tests for genomic alterations can be used for diagnosis and follow-up. Surgical intervention in combination with new chemotherapeutic agents is considered the optimal treatment for malignant cases. The balance...

Discovery of PXR agonists from Hypericum japonicum: A class of novel nonaromatic acylphloroglucinol-terpenoid adducts
Bioorg Chem. 2024 Apr 8;147:107354. doi: 10.1016/j.bioorg.2024.107354. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPregnane X receptor (PXR) has been considered as a promising therapeutic target for cholestasis due to its crucial regulation in bile acid biosynthesis and metabolism. To search promising natural PXR agonists, the PXR agonistic activities of five traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) with hepatoprotective efficacy were assayed, and Hypericum japonicum as the most active one was selected for subsequent phytochemical investigation, which led to the isolation of eight nonaromatic acylphloroglucinol-terpenoid adducts including s...
