Effects of nicotine on microRNA-124 expression in bile duct ligation-induced liver fibrosis in rats
CONCLUSION: Considering that miRNA-124 is an anti-inflammatory miRNA, it can be concluded that the decrease in its expression due to nicotine exposure leads to an increase in inflammatory processes and subsequently to an increase in liver fibrosis.PMID:38549169 | PMC:PMC10976767 | DOI:10.1186/s40360-024-00749-3 (Source: BMC Pharmacology and Toxicology)

The bile-gut axis and metabolic consequences of cholecystectomy
Eur J Endocrinol. 2024 Mar 29:lvae034. doi: 10.1093/ejendo/lvae034. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCholelithiasis and cholecystitis affect individuals of all ages and are often treated by surgical removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy), which is considered a safe, low-risk procedure. Nevertheless, recent findings show that bile and its regulated storage and excretion may have important metabolic effects and that cholecystectomy is associated with several metabolic diseases postoperatively. Bile acids have long been known as emulsifiers essential to the assimilation of lipids and absorption of lipid-soluble vitamins, b...

Colesevelam has no acute effect on postprandial GLP-1 levels but abolishes gallbladder refilling
CONCLUSION: Single-dose colesevelam had no effect on postprandial GLP-1 responses or glucose tolerance but disrupted postprandial gallbladder refilling by increasing CCK secretion and reducing circulating concentrations of FGF19 and bile acids. These findings leave the antidiabetic actions of colesevelam unresolved but provide mechanistic insights into its effect on gallbladder motility.PMID:38551029 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvae033 (Source: European Journal of Endocrinology)

Evaluation of Alternative Treatment Strategies for Bile Acid Malabsorption in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patients: A Network Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Tropifexor has been identified as the most successful medication in mitigating BAM symptoms. To ensure more accurate results, there is a need for randomized controlled clinical trials that involve a larger participant pool.PMID:38550552 | PMC:PMC10970039 | DOI:10.14740/jocmr5007 (Source: Clin Med Res)

Safety and efficacy of novel oblique-viewing scope for B2-endoscopic ultrasound-guided hepaticogastrostomy
CONCLUSIONS: B2-EUS-HGS can be performed safely with the novel EG-740UT (Fujifilm) OV-scope without transesophageal puncture and with a high success rate. B2-EUS-HGS using this novel OV scope may be the preferred strategy for EUS-HGS.PMID:38549245 | DOI:10.5946/ce.2023.129 (Source: Clinical Endoscopy)

Relationship between periodontal diseases and non-specific inflammatory bowel diseases - an  overview. Part I
Ann Agric Environ Med. 2024 Mar 25;31(1):1-7. doi: 10.26444/aaem/185764. Epub 2024 Mar 21.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: An increasing number of studies indicate that the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract are interconnected and that there is a potential causal link between non-specific inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and oral diseases. Therefore, following the example of the brain-gut axis, the concept of the gum-gut axis has now been put forward. The aim of the review is to assess the literature confirming the existence of the recently proposed gum-gut axis and the resulting relationships between non-specific ...
