Decreased connexin 40 expression of the sinoatrial node mediates ischemic stroke-induced arrhythmia in mice
CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, decreased connexin 40 expression in the sinoatrial node contributed to the ischemic stroke-induced cardiac arrhythmia. Therefore, enhancing connexin 40 expression holds promise as a potential therapeutic approach for ischemic stroke-induced arrhythmia.PMID:38599368 | DOI:10.1016/j.expneurol.2024.114773 (Source: Experimental Neurology)

Patient With Gender Dysphoria Diagnosed With Multiple Sclerosis Following Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy and Ventricular Arrhythmia: A Case Report and Systematic Literature Review
In this report, we also systematically reviewed published cases of takotsubo cardiomyopathy and MS and found that basal type takotsubo cardiomyopathy was the most common, and most patients presented with brainstem involvement of MS. An awareness of these associations by physicians, along with multidisciplinary collaboration, may facilitate the early diagnosis and improve the prognosis of these patients.PMID:38599863 | DOI:10.2169/internalmedicine.3442-23 (Source: Internal Medicine)

Inhaled bronchodilators for the prevention and treatment of chronic lung disease in preterm infants
CONCLUSIONS: Low-certainty evidence from one trial showed that inhaled bronchodilator prophylaxis may result in little or no difference in the incidence of mortality or CLD in preterm infants, when compared to placebo. The evidence is very uncertain about the effect of salbutamol on pneumothorax, and neither included study reported on the incidence of serious adverse effects. We identified no trials that studied the use of bronchodilator therapy for the treatment of CLD. Additional clinical trials are necessary to assess the role of bronchodilator agents in the prophylaxis or treatment of CLD. Researchers studying the effe...

Paeonol can improve hypoxic-induced H9c2 cells injury and ion channel activity by up-regulating the expression of CKIP-1
CONCLUSIONS: The protective effects of Paeonol on myocardial infarction rats and hypoxic H9c2 cells were achieved by up-regulating CKIP-1.PMID:38593570 | DOI:10.1016/j.tice.2024.102371 (Source: Tissue and Cell)

Update on cardiac imaging: A critical analysis
Clin Investig Arterioscler. 2024 Apr 8:S0214-9168(24)00022-6. doi: 10.1016/j.arteri.2024.03.001. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTImaging is instrumental in diagnosing and directing the management of atherosclerosis. In 1958 the first diagnostic coronary angiography (CA) was performed, and since then further development has led to new methods such as coronary CT angiography (CTA), optical coherence tomography (OCT), positron tomography (PET), and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS). Currently, CA remains powerful for visualizing coronary arteries; however, recent studies show the benefits of using other non-invasive techniques. T...

Phosphorylation-dependent allosteric regulation of Cx43 gap junction inhibitor potency
In this study, we used molecular docking, dual whole-cell patch-clamp, and Western blotting to investigate the impact of connexin phosphorylation on GJ chemical gating by α-pinene and other GJ inhibitors (octanol, carbenoxolone, mefloquine, intracellular pH, glycyrrhetinic acid, and sevoflurane) in HeLa cells expressing exogenous Cx43 (full length and truncated at amino acid 258) and other connexins typical of heart and/or nervous system (Cx36, Cx40, Cx45, and Cx47), and in cells expressing endogenous Cx43 (Novikoff and U-87). We found that Ca2+-regulated kinases, such as Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent kinase II, atypical prot...

Electrical storm after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation
ConclusionFollowing LVAD implantation, the rate of ES was 7% with majority of ES occurring within 30 days of LVAD. Risk factors for ES included pre-implant history of ventricular arrhythmias and ICD shock. ES was significantly associated with reduced survival compared to patients without ES. Caring for the Critically Ill Adult Congenital Heart Disease Patient
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThis review aims to discuss the unique challenges that adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) patients present in the intensive care unit.Recent FindingsRecent studies suggest that ACHD patients make up an increasing number of ICU admissions, and that their care greatly improves in centers with specialized ACHD care. Common reasons for admission include arrhythmia, hemorrhage, heart failure, and pulmonary disease.SummaryIt is critical that the modern intensivist understand not only the congenital anatomy and subsequent repairs an ACHD patient has undergone, but also how that anatomy can predispose t...

Machine learning in the prediction and detection of new-onset atrial fibrillation in ICU: a systematic review
This study aims to provide a comprehensive literature review on the application of machine learning (ML) algorithms for predicting and detecting new-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) in ICU-treated patients. Following the PRISMA recommendations, this systematic review outlines ML models employed in the prediction and detection of NOAF in ICU patients and compares the ML-based approach with clinical-based methods. Inclusion criteria comprised randomized controlled trials (RCTs), observational studies, cohort studies, and case –control studies. A total of five articles published between November 2020 and April 2023 were ide...

Association of minor electrocardiographic (ECG) abnormalities with epilepsy duration in children: a manifestation of the epileptic heart?
A myriad of ictal and interictal cardiac alterations has been described in individuals with epilepsy, such as rhythm disturbances, increased arrhythmogenic potential, and impaired cardiac function [1 –16]. Increasing evidence indicates that adults with epilepsy may be at a higher risk for major cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction, arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death [17–21]. Together, these observations in adults support the concept of “the epileptic heart”: cardiac str uctural and functional abnormalities as result of chronic epilepsy, which may lead to potentially deleterious sequelae [22]. (Sou...
