Nitrous oxide-induced myeloneuropathy in a Thai adolescent: a case report
Paediatr Int Child Health. 2024 Apr 29:1-4. doi: 10.1080/20469047.2024.2344403. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNitrous oxide, an inhalational anaesthetic, is popular with adolescents worldwide as an accessible recreational drug which induces a euphoric effect. However, chronic abuse leads to serious complications such as myeloneuropathy and bone marrow suppression by inactivation of vitamin B12. A 17-year-old girl presented with nitrous oxide-induced myeloneuropathy. She reported chronic nitrous oxide inhalation for 10 months and was admitted to the emergency department on account of repeated falls for 2 weeks. She also had...

Neither Amphetamine nor Sub-Anesthetic Ketamine Treatment during Adolescence Impairs Devaluation in Rats Tested during Adulthood
CONCLUSIONS: We discuss possible reasons for this discrepancy with the prior literature, including (1) the age of exposure and (2) the pattern in the previous literature that most previous demonstrations of drug exposure impairing devaluation in laboratory animals may be attributed to either drug-associated cues present in the testing environment and/or accelerated habit learning in tasks that predispose laboratory animals towards habit formation with extended training (with training procedures that should resist the formation of habits in the current experiment). However, additional research is needed to examine the effec...

Dexmedetomidine Pretreatment Confers Myocardial Protection and Reduces Mechanical Ventilation Duration for Patients Undergoing Cardiac Valve Replacement under Cardiopulmonary Bypass
CONCLUSION: The study suggests that 0.50 µg/kg Dex pretreatment could reduce propofol use and the duration of mechanical ventilation, and confer myocardial protection without increased adverse events during cardiac valve replacement.PMID:38684422 | DOI:10.5761/atcs.oa.23-00210 (Source: Annals of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Tissue oxygen saturation is positively correlated with oxygen delivery and cardiac output in a canine hemorrhagic shock and resuscitation model
Am J Vet Res. 2024 May 1:1-6. doi: 10.2460/ajvr.23.12.0297. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: To determine if tissue oxygen saturation (StO2) correlates with oxygen delivery (DO2) and/or cardiac output (CO) in a canine hemorrhagic shock model.ANIMALS: 8 healthy purpose-bred dogs.METHODS: Dogs were anesthetized, and hemorrhagic shock was induced by withdrawing up to 60% of total blood volume, targeting a mean arterial pressure (MAP) of 40 mm Hg. The withdrawn blood was returned to the patient in 2 equal aliquots. Data was collected at 4 time points: 10 minutes after MAP was stabilized under anesthesia (time point [TP...

Safety of tranexamic acid in surgically treated isolated spine trauma
CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated that TXA is safe for isolated spine trauma. It is challenging to determine whether TXA effectively reduces blood loss because most surgeons prefer TXA for open or multilevel cases. Further, larger studies are necessary to explore the rate, dosage, and mode of administration of TXA.PMID:38680673 | PMC:PMC11045465 | DOI:10.5312/wjo.v15.i4.346 (Source: World Journal of Orthopaedics)

Practice Guidelines for Central Venous Access 2020 - Time for German Guidelines
Anasthesiol Intensivmed Notfallmed Schmerzther. 2024 Apr;59(4):252-262. doi: 10.1055/a-1690-5730. Epub 2024 Apr 29.ABSTRACTThe American Society of Anesthesiologists released practice guidelines for central venous access in 2020, and the entire world literature was examined for evidence on how to perform the entire process with best practice and minimal risk and harm to the patient. These guidelines may serve as a gold standard for individual procedural steps, allowing practitioners and hospital departments to critically question the own standard and improve upon them.We interpreted the guidelines for individual procedural ...

To Compare the Anesthetic Effect of Remimazolam and Propofol in Painless Hysteroscopic Minimally Invasive Surgery
CONCLUSION: Intravenous induction of remimazolam at 6 mg·kg-1·h-1 and maintenance of anesthesia at 1-2 mg·kg-1·h-1 have less effect on hemodynamics, faster recovery time and lower incidence of adverse reactions compared with propofol when used in minimally invasive hysteroscopic surgery. Remimazolam can be safely and effectively used in this kind of surgery.PMID:38684498 | DOI:10.62713/aic.3291 (Source: Annali Italiani di Chirurgia)

A prospective randomized comparative trial of pediatric C-MAC D-blade video laryngoscope with McCoy direct laryngoscope for intubation in children posted for elective surgical procedures under general anesthesia
CONCLUSION: The C-MAC video laryngoscope size 2 D-blade provided faster and better glottic visualization but similar intubation difficulty compared to McCoy size 2 laryngoscope in children. The shorter time to achieve glottic view demonstrated with the C-MAC failed to translate into a shorter total duration of intubation when compared to the McCoy laryngoscope attributable to a pronounced curvature of the D-blade.PMID:38682461 | DOI:10.1111/pan.14911 (Source: Paediatric Anaesthesia)
