Perineal Squamous Cell Carcinoma Arising in an Epidermal Cyst
Acta Med Okayama. 2024 Apr;78(2):197-200. doi: 10.18926/AMO/66930.ABSTRACTA 90-year-old Japanese woman who had been aware of a subcutaneous mass on the right perineal region for 5 years was referred to our hospital for further examination and treatment because of the rapid growth of the mass and bleeding that began 3 months earlier. A biopsy of the mass revealed a diagnosis of well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. On preoperative examination, the tumor was 90×40 mm in size and was suspected to have partially invaded the levator ani muscle and external sphincter. Since a preoperative cardiac evaluation indicated sev...

Effect of isoflurane anaesthetic time on ocular a-scan ultrasonography measures and their relationship to age and OCT measures in the guinea pig
This study shows that the depth of ocular components can change dramatically with anaesthesia. Researchers should therefore be wary of these concomitant effects and should employ adjustments to better render 'true' values.PMID:38685338 | DOI:10.1016/j.exer.2024.109914 (Source: Experimental Eye Research)

Cystectomy for bladder cancer in Sweden - short-term outcomes after centralization
CONCLUSION: After the centralization of the cystectomy-care in Sweden, older patients and individuals with more extensive comorbidity were offered RC whereas 90-day mortality and the proportion of patients subjected to reoperations within 90 days of surgery decreased without increasing waiting times.PMID:38685576 | DOI:10.2340/sju.v59.40120 (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Urology)

Delta-SVV as a Predictor for Circulating Blood Volume Evaluation during Intraoperative Period: A Prospective Cohort Study
CONCLUSION: In conclusion, SVV measured by FloTrac / Vigileo could guile fluid therapy precisely by predicting the blood volume of patients during the intraoperative period, as it has a strong linear correlation with the blood volume of patients who underwent general anesthesia, meaning anesthesiologist could calculate the exact fluid volume for patients' infusion. Further studies with large cohorts and centers would be needed to validate its efficiency.PMID:38687861 (Source: Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine)

Dexmedetomidine hydrochloride plus sufentanil citrate inhibits glucose metabolism and epithelial ‑mesenchymal transition in human esophageal squamous carcinoma KYSE30 cells by modulating the JAK/STAT3/HIF‑1α axis
Oncol Lett. 2024 Apr 18;27(6):273. doi: 10.3892/ol.2024.14406. eCollection 2024 Jun.ABSTRACTDexmedetomidine hydrochloride (DEX-HCl) and sufentanil citrate (SFC) are commonly used anesthetic drugs for esophageal cancer (EC) surgery. The present study was performed to investigate the effect of DEX-HCl and SFC treatment on glucose metabolism and epithelial-mesenchymal transition in EC. Cell counting kit-8 (CCK8), clonogenic, wound healing and Transwell migration assays were performed to assess the effects of the DEX-HCl and SFC on KYSE30 cell proliferation, invasion and migration. Changes in lactate and glucose levels in KYSE...

A retrospective study on the delay in three different timescales of CT simulation among patients with pediatric cancer in a tertiary hospital
In conclusion, outpatients may experience CT sim delays. Machine availability, conditions of patients and IMRT treatment were the major reasons to cause the delay in CT sim. Strategies should be employed to prevent CT sim delays and improve patient experience.PMID:38686353 | PMC:PMC11056923 | DOI:10.3892/ol.2024.14405 (Source: Oncology Letters)

Experimental laboratory models as tools for understanding modifiable dementia risk
Alzheimers Dement. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.1002/alz.13834. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExperimental laboratory research has an important role to play in dementia prevention. Mechanisms underlying modifiable risk factors for dementia are promising targets for dementia prevention but are difficult to investigate in human populations due to technological constraints and confounds. Therefore, controlled laboratory experiments in models such as transgenic rodents, invertebrates and in vitro cultured cells are increasingly used to investigate dementia risk factors and test strategies which target them to prevent dementia. This re...

Development of rabbit models of ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia produced by carbapenem-resistant < em > Pseudomonas aeruginosa < /em >
Antimicrob Agents Chemother. 2024 Apr 30:e0020524. doi: 10.1128/aac.00205-24. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVentilator-associated bacterial pneumonia (VABP) is among the most intractable of carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections. New antimicrobial agents are critically needed for the treatment of VABP. However, current conventionally used animal model systems are inadequate to meet this challenge. We, therefore, developed rabbit models of VABP caused by carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Persistently neutropenic New Zealand White rabbits were used throughout the study. The early-phase intubated m...
