Treatment of Tinnitus with Intratympanic Injection of Dexamethasone Versus Oral Drugs
AbstractTinnitus is a symptom of cochlear dysfunction, which can disturb the patient emotionally and physically. As anxiety and tinnitus persist concurrently, certain benzodiazepines have been administered as possible tinnitus treatment options. In addition to pharmacological medications, certain studies have looked at the use of vitamins to treat tinnitus. Intratympanic steroids have been successfully used in various studies as well, for the treatment of tinnitus. A clinical based interventional study was taken up among the patients visiting the ENT OPD of a State Medical College and Hospital. 160 subjects were included i...

APA Responds to DEA ’s Proposed Rules Regarding Telehealth, Buprenorphine
Today APA filed two letters with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in response to two proposed rules that if finalized would affect how health professionals implement telehealth services and prescribe certain controlled medications. The proposed rules, which were developed with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and in close coordination with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs andannounced on February 24, would extend certain flexibilities in these areas after the COVID-19 public health emergency expires on May 11. Yet in several ways the proposed rules are more restrictive than what the pub...

Utilization of psychotropic medicines in Romania during 1998 –2018
Conclusion: We observed an increasing utilization of APs and a more prominent increase in ADs utilization in Romania during 1998–2018. The anxiolytic prescribing remained nearly stable during this time. Further research can bring more information on the various factors influencing psychotropic utilization in Romania. Benzodiazepine Analysis by an Improved LC-MS/MS Method Illustrates Usage Patterns in Washington State
CONCLUSION: New illicit benzodiazepines have emerged regionally and nationally. The inclusion of novel drugs in LC-MS/MS assay was helpful in properly characterizing the epidemiology of benzodiazepine use in our patient population. This information will lead to better assay result interpretations and patient care, and our experiences provide a roadmap for other clinical laboratories looking to expand their testing menu or transition to new instrumentation.PMID:36934953 | DOI:10.1016/j.cca.2023.117274 (Source: International Journal of Clinical Chemistry)

Species-specific bioaccumulation and risk prioritization of psychoactive substances in cultured fish
In this study, the accumulation and risk of twenty psychoactive substances were investigated in five species of cultured fish in Eastern China. The results showed that the total concentrations of these twenty psychoactive substances ranged from 0.15 to 0.92 ng mL-1 in the plasma among the five species of cultured fish with an order of perch > crucian carp > bighead carp > grass carp > silver carp. Diazepam (DIAZ) and methamphetamine (MAMP) were identified as the most frequently detected compounds, which were found in 100% and 93% of the samples with a median concentration of 0.15 and 0.12 ng mL-1 in the plasma,...

Alprazolam misuse: Analysis of French Addictovigilance Network data from 2011 to 2020
CONCLUSIONS: This study highlighted an increase in various signals of alprazolam abuse in France, and an increased use of the alprazolam-opioid combination that was also linked to most of the recorded alprazolam-linked deaths. These signals have been reported also in the international literature, and should be thoroughly investigated.PMID:36918317 | DOI:10.1016/j.therap.2023.02.002 (Source: Therapie)

Designer benzodiazepine rat pharmacokinetics: A comparison of alprazolam, flualprazolam and flubromazolam
Toxicol Appl Pharmacol. 2023 Mar 10:116459. doi: 10.1016/j.taap.2023.116459. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDesigner benzodiazepines, including flualprazolam and flubromazolam, are clandestinely produced to circumvent federal regulations. Although flualprazolam and flubromazolam are structurally similar to alprazolam, they do not have an approved medical indication. Flualprazolam differs from alprazolam by the addition of a single fluorine atom. Whereas, flubromazolam differs by the addition of a single fluorine atom and substitution of a bromine for a chlorine atom. The pharmacokinetics of these designer compounds have not...

Using Alprazolam before phacoemulsification cataract surgery reduces complications and duration of the surgery
ConclusionsUsing Alprazolam before phacoemulsification can lead to less posterior capsule rupture, short operation time and prevent repetitive surgery. It also reduces rapid PCO formation and, thus, early Nd:YAG laser intervention due to better cleaning the posterior capsule during surgery. We conclude that Alprazolam not only reduces intraoperative complications, but also facilitates their management. (Source: International Ophthalmology)

Weighted Blankets for Pain and Anxiety Relief in Acutely Injured Trauma Patients
In this study, 12 patients using weighted blankets for five consecutive days were compared to a matched retrospective cohort of 12 patients not using a blanket. The change in morphine milligram equivalents (MME) and alprazolam milligram equivalents (AME) over five days were compared. There was a significant difference of MME per day between the intervention group (mean MME change = -22.9) and matched controls (mean MME change = 6.2; p = 0.0072) by blanket use. Total MMEs in the intervention group decreased by 275.5 and in the control group increased by 75 between day 1 and day 5. There was no significant difference in AME ...
