From liver to hormones: The endocrine consequences of cirrhosis
This article provides a comprehensive review of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of endocrine disturbances in liver cirrhosis. The review was conducted using the PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, and Scielo databases, encompassing 172 articles. Liver cirrhosis is associated with endocrine disturbances, including diabetes, hypoglycemia, sarcopenia, thyroid dysfunction, hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, bone disease, adrenal insufficiency, growth hormone dysfunction, and secondary hyperaldosteronism. The optimal tools for diagnosing diabetes and detecting hypoglycemia are the oral glucose tolerance test and con...

Monitoring adrenal insufficiency through salivary steroids: a pilot study
CONCLUSIONS: None of the GRTs mimics normal glucocorticoid rhythmicity and exposure. SalE, SalF and Z-score may be useful markers for monitoring and comparing different GRTs. Excess glucocorticoid in early afternoon best associated with depressive symptoms and worse life and sleep quality.PMID:38571387 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvae037 (Source: European Journal of Endocrinology)

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 443: User Manual for Coping Strategies Inventory Short Form (CSI-SF) & mdash; The Jackson Heart Study
In this study, the CSI-SF was assessed to be a reliable and valid instrument for measuring coping strategies. The CSI-SF serves the purpose of developing an inner voice that can assist with understanding how people cope with everyday life. The information gathered from the administration of the CSI-SF can inform investigators about environmental cues and triggers that can also impact individual health. Convolutional Neural Networks To Study Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging Based Skeletal Calf Muscle Perfusion In Peripheral Artery Disease
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is associated with impaired blood flow in the lower extremities and histopathological changes of the skeletal calf muscles resulting in abnormal microvascular perfusion. We studied the use of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to differentiate PAD patients from matched controls by utilizing perfusion pattern features from contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (CE-MRI) of the skeletal calf muscles. We acquired CE-MRI based skeletal calf muscle perfusion in 56 individuals (36 PAD patients, 20 matched controls). (Source: The American Journal of Cardiology)

An Examination of Psycho-Behavioral Risk and Resilience in People with Chronically Painful Knee Osteoarthritis
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a common chronic condition that often results in high levels of pain severity and functional impairment. People with chronic pain tend to have poor sleep and are at greater psychological risk for experiencing persistent negative mood states. Additionally, measurements of psychological resilience also tend to be lower in people with knee OA. However, there are still mixed findings within the literature as to the exact relationships between psychological risk/resilience, sleep quality, pain and functioning in people with chronic pain. A Comprehensive Pain-Related Risk And Protective Index And Machine Learning Brain Age Gap
We reported that greater chronic pain severity and socioenvironmental risk and lower biobehavioral/psychosocial resilience are associated with higher allostatic load across multiple measures. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between a combined measure of chronic pain, socioenvironmental status, and biobehavioral/psychosocial resilience with a measure of allostatic load, predicted-chronological brain age gap (BAG). The Impact of Pre-Trauma Steroid Use on Wound Healing and Outcomes
This study presents data on pre-trauma steroid use, a topic underrepresented in the trauma literature. Long-term steroid use has been linked to impaired wound healing, compromised immune responses, and hindrance of bone healing, alongside the potential for adrenal insufficiency during traumatic events. The aim of this study was to conduct a retrospective analysis of clinical outcomes for trauma patients with chronic steroid use. Examining adult trauma cases with pre-trauma steroid use at a level 1 trauma center (January 2016-September 2023), we identified 18 patients (58.6 ± 19.4 years, 55.6% males). All were on prednison...
