What should I do during medical school to improve my chances?
Hi all! I am starting medical school in the fall, and I am really interested in becoming a psychiatrist. I would ideally like to match into a competitive psychiatry residency (Ex: Yale, University of Washington, etc.) and I am hoping to get some advice from others that are more experienced than myself. My main question is, what can I do during medical school to make sure that I am a great applicant for these types of residencies? So far, I have a first-authored publication about autism in a... Yale MPH 2017
I thought I would create a thread to discuss any thoughts or questions about the program/housing as the deadline to commit approaches. I'm most likely attending Yale, and I will also be going to the Open House on April 3rd. Who else is leaning towards committing? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Harvard vs. Yale vs. UCSF vs. Weill Cornell
Hi everyone! I find myself in a very lucky position, deciding among great schools. I feel very grateful to have these opportunities, but wanted to get some input from fellow SDNers! I've been admitted to several schools this cycle, but the ones I'm considering the most are Harvard, Yale, Weill Cornell, and UCSF. I'm interested in neurology and would like to incorporate research into my career. While I'm leaning towards neurology, I like neuroscience in general and could also see myself in... WashU vs CCLCM vs Yale vs Vanderbilt
I'm pretty stuck even between the four schools. Final financial aid hasn't come out yet, but I'll be at the unit loan level for two schools (Yale and WashU(potential for merit aid here as well)). I've been accepted to all but Yale - I'm on their wait list and I have a substantial update I can send them with a LOI if I decided that is the direction I want to take. I am very interested in academic medicine and I am open to living in an area I don't like (read: anywhere but the PNW), but my... WashU vs CCLCM vs Yale vs Vanderbilt (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Why is "Step Up to Medicine" reviewed by mostly medical students at "lower-tier" schools?
Completely unimportant, just-because-I-was-wondering type of question. I was simply surprised, I was expecting contributors from Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, etc, but nope. It's a lot of people from places like Lake Erie, Edward Via. Not saying that's bad I'm sure they're brilliant people. Like I said I was just surprised, there may not even be a real answer. How to Attain Academic-Oriented Predoctoral Internship
Hi all, I would please appreciate any advice on this issue. I am currently choosing between a few counseling and clinical psychology programs, and I'd like to know what factors are most important to secure a predoctoral internship at sites that have a reputation for sending their students into academic careers (e.g., Brown, Yale, etc.). I quickly read over this guide, but I was wondering if there are... How to Attain Academic-Oriented Predoctoral Internship (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Thoughts on choosing location/family over program strength
I am 4th year applying to internal medicine and my wife and I are struggling with the rank process. I am fortunate that as an average med student, I've been granted interviews at some really great programs. To give you a sense of the reputation spread of my programs, my most "prestigious" is maybe Yale or Mayo and least "prestigious" is Rutgers. Within that range of programs I did occasionally feel I had a better fit at many programs that were on the lower end of the name-brand spectrum too.... No idea what's going on
I applied to 17 schools back in July been denied by 4 and haven't heard back from the rest. Assuming I'm just gonna take the L for this cycle since it's basically over, I'm trying to find out what I need to do to improve my app. I applied to a lot of schools that are on the lower end of stats (in state Florida) and nothing however I've been offered post bac research positions at Yale, NIH, Mayo, UCSF and Harvard. 3.9 gpa/509 mcat 2 summers doing clinical research at Mayo with 1 publication... How much weight does being related to faculty have for MD admission?
My friend keeps bragging about how he's set for Med School because his father is an assistant professor at the Yale School of Medicine. Is he spouting hot air, or does this have a tangible impact on matriculation chances? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Program vs. Program
So, as rank lists are due in less than 3 weeks and seeing how a lot of programs have changed over the past year, I figured we could start a new program comparison thread to get some other viewpoints. Starting out: Mayo vs Yale: - Enjoyed both, really liked Yale's new Chair but that could mean a lot of change. Mayo seems pretty well established but I don't know too much how residents fair in terms of fellowship match (other than plastics). Thoughts? (Source: Student Doctor Network)
