A detailed characterization of drug resistance during darunavir/ritonavir monotherapy highlights a high barrier to the emergence of resistance mutations in protease but identifies alternative pathways of resistance
ConclusionsThe study highlights the high resistance barrier of ritonavir-boosted darunavir while identifying alternative pathways of resistance through Gag substitutions. During virological suppression, resistance patterns in HIV-1 DNA reflect treatment history, but due to technical and biological considerations, cautious interpretation is warranted. Switching Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (TDF) to Tenofovir Alafenamide Fumarate (TAF) in Hepatitis B/HIV Co-Infection: A Feasibility Study
Clin Ther. 2023 Dec 23:S0149-2918(23)00465-4. doi: 10.1016/j.clinthera.2023.11.016. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE: Tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) delivers the active metabolite more efficiently to target cells compared with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF). Recent studies suggest that TAF is efficacious in treatment naïve individuals who are co-infected with HBV/HIV and may have superior effects on HBV e antigen (HBeAg) seroconversion in this setting. The primary objective of this study was to explore the feasibility of switching from TDF to TAF in HBV/HIV co-infection.METHODS: In this single-arm, multicenter, ope...

Tenofovir amibufenamide < em > vs < /em > tenofovir alafenamide for treating chronic hepatitis B: A real-world study
CONCLUSION: Our study found TMF is as effective as TAF in treating CHB and has a comparable safety profile. However, TAF may be associated with worsening lipid profiles.PMID:38111506 | PMC:PMC10725562 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v29.i44.5907 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology : WJG)

Pre-exposure prophylactic mucoadhesive sodium alginate microsphere laden pessaries for intravaginal delivery of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Dec 17:128816. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.128816. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe research aimed to develop novel bioadhesive sodium alginate (Na-Alg) microspheres laden pessaries for intravaginal delivery of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), to overcome limitations of conventional dosage forms. Twelve batches of microspheres formulated by emulsification gelation method indicated that drug-polymer ratios and polymer type affected particle size, drug release, and entrapment efficiency (%EE). Microspheres of batch EH-8 with drug: polymer ratio of 1:4 containing equal amounts of Na-Alg and HPM...

Comparative effectiveness of tenofovir versus entecavir in patients with hepatitis B virus-related cirrhosis in Taiwan: a retrospective cohort study
Conclusion: Tenofovir presented a significantly lower incidence of cirrhosis-related complications than entecavir in patients with hepatitis B virus-related cirrhosis. However, no statistically significant difference in death and liver transplantation was seen in treatment-experienced patients. (Source: Frontiers in Pharmacology)

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 2432: Impact of Combination Antiretroviral Treatment on Liver Metabolic Health in HIV-Infected Persons
lot In the last three decades, there has been a considerable improvement in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) therapy. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is no longer a common cause of death for people living with HIV (PLWH) in developed countries, and co-infections with hepatitis viruses can be effectively managed. However, metabolic syndrome and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) are emerging threats these days, especially as the HIV-positive population gets older. The factors for MASLD development in PLWH are numerous, including non-specific (common for both HIV-positive and neg...
