The Effect of Stigma on Family Planning and HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Decisions of Young Women Accessing Post-Abortion Care in Kenya
AbstractAdolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Eastern and Southern Africa face parallel epidemics of unintended pregnancy and HIV. Their sexual health decisions are often dominated by intersecting stigmas. In an implementation science project integrating delivery of daily, oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention into 14 post-abortion care (PAC) clinics in Kenya, we enrolled a subset of PrEP initiating AGYW (aged 15 to 30  years) into a research cohort. Utilizing log binomial models, we estimated the effect of PrEP stigma on PrEP continuation (measured via self-report and urine assay for tenofovir) and...

Phase 1 randomized pharmacokinetic and safety study of a 90-day tenofovir vaginal ring in the United States
CONCLUSIONS: The 90-day TFV ring was well-tolerated, acceptable and exceeded target cervical tissue concentrations through day 56, but declined thereafter. Additional studies are needed to characterize the higher release from TFV rings in some participants and the optimal duration of use.PMID:38444118 | DOI:10.1002/jia2.26223 (Source: Herpes)

Effect of differentiated direct-to-pharmacy PrEP refill visits supported with client HIV self-testing on clinic visit time and early PrEP continuation
CONCLUSIONS: A client-centred PrEP delivery approach with direct-to-pharmacy PrEP refill visits plus client HIVST significantly reduced clinic visit time by more than one-third and improved PrEP continuation in public health HIV clinics in Kenya.PMID:38446643 | DOI:10.1002/jia2.26222 (Source: Journal of the International AIDS Society)

What does the scale-up of long-acting HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis mean for the global hepatitis B epidemic?
CONCLUSIONS: Long-acting PrEP holds promise for reducing HIV incidence, but its implications for the HBV epidemic, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, should not be overlooked.PMID:38444112 | DOI:10.1002/jia2.26218 (Source: Journal of the International AIDS Society)

Real-world persistence with dolutegravir/lamivudine versus bictegravir/emtricitabina/tenofovir-alafenamide among people with HIV
CONCLUSION: In our study patients had a high persistence. Patients on DTG/3TC treatment were more persistent compared to BIC/FTC/TAF, although BIC/FTC/TAF have worse baseline characteristics. The main reason for discontinuation of BIC/FTC/TAF was tolerability/toxicity.PMID:38448360 | DOI:10.1016/j.farma.2024.02.002 (Source: Farmacia Hospitalaria)

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 405: Dolutegravir + Lamivudine vs. Dolutegravir + Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate/Emtricitabine: Very-Low-Level HIV-1 Replication through 144 Weeks in the GEMINI-1 and GEMINI-2 Studies
an Jörg Sievers In GEMINI-1/-2, dolutegravir + lamivudine was non-inferior to dolutegravir + tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine (TDF/FTC) in achieving viral suppression (viral load [VL] < 50 copies/mL) in treatment-naive adults. Abbott’s RealTime HIV-1 assay provides quantitative VL (40–10,000,000 copies/mL) and qualitative target detected or target not detected (TND) for VL < 40 copies/mL. This post hoc analysis assessed very-low-level viremia and “blips” through Week 144. Proportions with VL < 40 copies/mL and TND are...

Prevalence of HIV Drug Resistance Mutations among Treatment-Naive People Living with HIV in a Tertiary Care Center in India
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2024 Mar 5:tpmd230026. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.23-0026. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIndia has the third-largest number of people living with HIV (PLHIV) in the world. A national program provides free access to standard uniform antiretroviral therapy. However, the program is not monitored by comprehensive drug resistance surveys. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of HIV drug resistance mutations (DRMs) among treatment-naive PLHIV in a large antiretroviral treatment center of the national program. This cross-sectional study was done in 2017 and involved 200 consecutive treatment-naive PLHI...
