A standard lexicon of terms for area-based conservation version 1.0
Conserv Biol. 2024 Apr 25:e14269. doi: 10.1111/cobi.14269. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTarget 3 in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) calls for protecting at least 30% of the world's lands and waters in area-based conservation approaches by 2030. This ambitious 30×30 target has spurred great interest among policy makers, practitioners, and researchers in defining and measuring the effectiveness of these types of approaches. But along with this broad interest, there has also been a proliferation of terms and their accompanying abbreviations used to describe different types of conservation areas and ...

Exploring local perceptions and drivers of engagement in biodiversity monitoring among participants in payments for ecosystem services schemes in southeastern Mexico
We examined perceptions and drivers of engagement related to biodiversity monitoring through surveys among current PES participants in 7 communities in Mexico's Selva Lacandona. We conducted workshops among survey participants that included training and field deployment of tools used to monitor biodiversity and land cover, including visual transects, camera traps, acoustic recorders, and forest cover satellite images. We conducted pre- and postworkshop surveys in each community to evaluate changes in respondents' perceptions following exposure to biodiversity monitoring training and related field activities. We also review...

Development of surface molecular-imprinted electrochemical sensor for palmitic acid with machine learning assistance
Talanta. 2024 Apr 24;275:126124. doi: 10.1016/j.talanta.2024.126124. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPalmitic acid (PA) is a kind of saturated high fatty acid, which is involved in physiological safety and food quality. A surface molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) electrochemical sensor was prepared on MXene surface using dopamine (DA) as functional monomer. The electrode was modified with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), ferrocene-graphene oxide-multiwalled carbon nanotubes (Fc-GO-MWCNT) composite to enhance the electroactive area and conductivity. The sensor was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispe...

RamanCluster: A deep clustering-based framework for unsupervised Raman spectral identification of pathogenic bacteria
Talanta. 2024 Apr 13;275:126076. doi: 10.1016/j.talanta.2024.126076. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRaman spectroscopy serves as a powerful and reliable tool for the characterization of pathogenic bacteria. The integration of Raman spectroscopy with artificial intelligence techniques to rapidly identify pathogenic bacteria has become paramount for expediting disease diagnosis. However, the development of prevailing supervised artificial intelligence algorithms is still constrained by costly and limited well-annotated Raman spectroscopy datasets. Furthermore, tackling various high-dimensional and intricate Raman spectra of p...

Quantifying the scale of erosion along major coastal aquifers of Pakistan using geospatial and machine learning approaches
This study aims to monitor erosion along the major coastal aquifers of Pakistan and propose an approach that combines data fusion into the machine and deep learning image segmentation architectures for the erosion and accretion assessment in seascapes. The analysis demonstrated the image segmentation U-Net with EfficientNet backbone achieved the highest F1 score of 0.93, while ResNet101 achieved the lowest F1 score of 0.77. Resultant erosion maps indicated that Sandspit experiencing erosion at 3.14 km2 area. Indus delta is showing erosion, approximately 143 km2 of land over the past 30 years. Sonmiani has undergone substan...

Challenges faced with 3D-printed electrochemical sensors in analytical applications
Anal Bioanal Chem. 2024 Apr 26. doi: 10.1007/s00216-024-05308-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrototyping analytical devices with three-dimensional (3D) printing techniques is becoming common in research laboratories. The attractiveness is associated with printers' price reduction and the possibility of creating customized objects that could form complete analytical systems. Even though 3D printing enables the rapid fabrication of electrochemical sensors, its wider adoption by research laboratories is hindered by the lack of reference material and the high "entry barrier" to the field, manifested by the need to learn how ...

Effects of extracorporeal diaphragm pacing combined with inspiratory muscle training on respiratory function in people with stroke: a randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSION: EDP combined with inspiratory muscle training in individuals with stroke provides greater benefits than EDP alone in terms of respiratory function recovery, except for the parameters of diaphragmatic excursion and FEV1/FVC%.PMID:38661091 | DOI:10.1080/01616412.2024.2347133 (Source: Neurological Research)

European pathways of care in Alpha-1 Antitrypsin deficiency
CONCLUSIONS: European care pathways for AATD are largely uniform, but with notable heterogeneity in testing approaches and a need for education and standardisation. Familiarity with and use of ERN-LUNG AATD services is variable, and increased awareness of these services is warranted.PMID:38661678 | DOI:10.1016/j.rmed.2023.107450 (Source: Respiratory Care)

An Ensemble Feature Selection Approach-Based Machine Learning Classifiers for Prediction of COVID-19 Disease
Int J Telemed Appl. 2024 Apr 17;2024:8188904. doi: 10.1155/2024/8188904. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTThe respiratory disease of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has wreaked havoc on the economy of every nation by infecting and killing millions of people. This deadly disease has taken a toll on the life of the entire human race, and an exact cure for it is still not developed. Thus, the control and cure of this disease mainly depend on restricting its transmission rate through early detection. The detection of coronavirus infection facilitates the isolation and exclusive care of infected patients. This research paper propos...
