Even worse for Black girls: the longitudinal association of racial bullying with the initiation of alcohol and tobacco use
Am J Epidemiol. 2024 Apr 15:kwae047. doi: 10.1093/aje/kwae047. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe used Poisson's linear regression to examine the association between racial bullying (RB) and the initiation of alcohol and tobacco uses after nine months. Two cluster randomized controlled trials were conducted in 2019 with fifth (girls: 50.0%; 10 years old: 82.0%; White: 36.8%; Black: 58.7%; Others: 4.5%) and seventh graders (girls: 49.5%; 12 years old: 78.1%; White: 33.2%; Black: 60.4%; Others: 6.4%) from 30 public schools in the municipality of São Paulo, Brazil. We restricted our analyzes on two subsets of students in each ...

Psychometric properties of the Turkish reduced morningness and eveningness questionnaire
Chronobiol Int. 2024 Apr 17:1-15. doi: 10.1080/07420528.2024.2339964. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the 5-item Turkish Reduced Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (rMEQ) for the first time. The study involved 875 university students in an adaptation and validation study. Participants completed the rMEQ, MEQ, Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Barratt Impulsiveness Scale Short Form (BIS-SF), and Oxford Happiness Questionnaire Short Form (OHQ-SF). The factor structure, convergent validity, internal consistency, sen...

Predicting the risk of early intensive care unit admission for patients hospitalized with acute pancreatitis using supervised machine learning
CONCLUSIONS: This supervised machine learning-based model can help recognize high-risk AP hospitalizations. Clinicians may use the IAPR score to identify patients with AP at high risk of ICU admission within the first week of hospitalization.PMID:38628340 | PMC:PMC11018057 | DOI:10.1080/08998280.2024.2326371 (Source: Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings)

The one cloud on a sunny day: Using emotional intelligence to manage emotions from negative written feedback
Proc (Bayl Univ Med Cent). 2024 Mar 4;37(3):501-502. doi: 10.1080/08998280.2024.2315871. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTPhysician trainees receive anonymous written feedback about their clinical performance, which can be challenging to interpret. Negative written feedback can evoke a strong emotional response. An educational gap exists on how to handle receiving negative written feedback and the accompanying emotions. Teaching trainees the tenets of emotional intelligence, including emotional self-awareness and self-management, could be an avenue to improve the experience of receiving feedback. Face-to-face coaching may also hel...

Leonard Rowntree, Louis Wilson, Fielding Garrison, and the origins of teaching medical history at the Mayo Clinic
Proc (Bayl Univ Med Cent). 2024 Feb 28;37(3):493-500. doi: 10.1080/08998280.2024.2314448. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTA visiting surgeon described his disappointment with an aspect of the Mayo Clinic in 1914, stating that there was "the almost lack of anything that could be dignified by the term 'lecture.'" One year later, the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research was founded. By 1917, the foundation declared history of medicine a graduate-level subject, and history of medicine questions were included in final oral examinations. In 1920 and 1921, lectures were given on historical topics; however, these lectures p...

Factors associated with unintended perianesthesia hypothermia
CONCLUSIONS: The novel and noteworthy finding was the association between TIVA and perianesthesia hypothermia. Thoracic, radiologic, and obstetrical procedures were associated with greater rates of and odds for hypothermia. Other identified factors can help to stratify patients for risk for hypothermia.PMID:38628320 | PMC:PMC11018043 | DOI:10.1080/08998280.2024.2314443 (Source: Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings)

Application of improved glomerular filtration rate estimation by a neural network model in patients with neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction
CONCLUSION: The MLP-based model offered significant advantages in estimating GFR in Chinese NLUTD patients, and its application could be suggested in clinical practice.PMID:38629744 | DOI:10.5414/CN111150 (Source: Clinical Nephrology)

Metabolic and ultrastructural renal changes in adult Wistar rats fed by a cafeteria diet
CONCLUSIONS: The intake of lipids and simple carbohydrates were found to be associated with alteration in the glomerular ultrastructure. However, more studies are needed to evaluate not only the effects of high-protein and high-fat diets on components of the glomerular filtration barrier, but also renal physiology.PMID:38629653 | PMC:PMC11020636 | DOI:10.1590/acb392224 (Source: Acta Cirurgica Brasileira)

The attentional guidance and facilitating effects of group behavioral cues on individual college pedestrians' jaywalking decisions
CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that pedestrians' jaywalking decisions were based on other pedestrians' illegal crossing cues and automatic associative processes in low-risk situations. The higher the number of people crossing the street, the higher the number of pedestrians illegally crossing the road. In high-risk situations, pedestrians paid more attention to vehicle hazard cues before making jaywalking decisions, and fewer illegal crossings. The jaywalking decisions were based on a risk assessment, a controlled analytical process. The results verify the effect of visual cues on pedestrians' attentional guidance and d...
