Sea creatures began to glow half a billion years ago
When a shaggy bamboo coral ( Isidella tentaculum ) gets jostled by the arm of a remotely operated submersible, its limbs begin to sparkle with bluish light. The gleam penetrates the blackness of the deep sea, where many octocorals—an ancient, diverse group of marine invertebrates that includes quill-shaped sea pens, bamboo corals, and other soft corals and waving sea fans—form lush underwater gardens. Some three-quarters of all undersea animals can generate their own light , but the origin of this ability has been shrouded in mystery. Now, research reported today in the Proceedings...

Perceptions of Sun Protection, Skin Tone, Colorism, and Dermatologic Care Among South Asians in the USA
This study evaluates motivations of sun protection use, attitudes of colorism, and skin lightening (SL) practices among SA Americans. Two-hundred-four participants recruited from onli ne forums and ResearchMatch completed a questionnaire. Over half (111/204) reported use of sunscreen, of which 39.6% (44/111) reported daily or frequent use. Nearly half of respondents (98/204) believed that they are not at risk for skin cancer, with 37.7% (77/204) reporting minimal knowledge of ski n cancers and only 4.9% (10/204) receiving a total body skin exam. Efficient EndoNeRF reconstruction and its application for data-driven surgical simulation
ConclusionWe have proposed a novel NeRF-based reconstruction framework with an emphasis on simulation purposes. Our reconstruction framework facilitates the efficient creation of high-quality surgical soft tissue 3D models. With multiple soft tissue simulations demonstrated, we show that our work has the potential to benefit downstream clinical tasks, such as surgical education. Evaluation of ChatGPT and Gemini large language models for pharmacometrics with NONMEM
AbstractTo assess ChatGPT 4.0 (ChatGPT) and Gemini Ultra 1.0 (Gemini) large language models on NONMEM coding tasks relevant to pharmacometrics and clinical pharmacology. ChatGPT and Gemini were assessed on tasks mimicking real-world applications of NONMEM. The tasks ranged from providing a curriculum for learning NONMEM, an overview of NONMEM code structure to generating code. Prompts in lay language to elicit NONMEM code for a linear pharmacokinetic (PK) model with oral administration and a more complex model with two parallel first-order absorption mechanisms were investigated. Reproducibility and the impact of “temper...

Determinants of normal haemoglobin concentration among under-five children in Sub-Saharan Africa: a Positive deviance inquiry using cross-sectional study design
Conclusion According to our finding, only four out of 10 under-five children in SSA had a normal haemoglobin level. This finding proved that anaemia among children in SSA remains a serious public health concern. Therefore, improving maternal education, provision of drugs for an intestinal parasite and early detection and treatment of maternal anaemia, febrile illness and diarrhoeal disease is important.
