Primary Technology Enhanced Care Home HbA1c Testing (PTEC HAT) programme: a feasibility pilot study in Singapore
CONCLUSION: Our findings support home HbA1c testing by patients coupled with telemonitoring and teleconsultations. Following are practical recommendations for the implementation scaling phase: offering PTEC HAT Programme to suitable patients who are self-motivated and have adequate digital literacy, provision of adequate educational and training support, sending reminders and exploring enabling manual submission of HbA1c readings considering Bluetooth-related challenges.PMID:38654201 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-024-02373-w (Source: Primary Care)

Professional identity and GP trainers as educational leaders
Educ Prim Care. 2024 Apr 23:1-5. doi: 10.1080/14739879.2024.2329891. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGP training in the UK has a long history of success, however that is measured. That success is in part due to the formality and credentialling that underlies preparation to take on that role of a GP teacher, which is somewhat under current threat due to workforce pressures. We identify three important factors associated with the GP trainer function [leadership, professional identity and clinical care improvement] that are not often analysed but are at some risk if preparation for the GP trainer role is reduced or devalued. Of...

Spatial and emotional distances in parent-child relationships: Impacts on human capital development in rural Chinese boarding children
CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study strengthen the link between parent-child distance and rural boarding children and the moderating impact of living with grandparents on the effect of parent-child distance on rural boarding children's human capital providing new insights for promoting the development of rural boarding children. It also highlights the detrimental effects of emotional neglect on rural boarding children's development. This is important for realizing China's rural revitalization strategy and the healthy development of disadvantaged children in rural areas.PMID:38653080 | DOI:10.1016/j.actpsy.2024.104283 (...

The perception and passage of time during public speaking
Acta Psychol (Amst). 2024 Apr 22;246:104268. doi: 10.1016/j.actpsy.2024.104268. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSeveral studies have shown that anxious individuals experience a slower passage of time under threat conditioning. Anxiety-evoking situations have also been proposed to elevate arousal levels, which, in turn, alter one's time percept. However, the effect of social stressors on time perception remains significantly neglected. The current research aimed to investigate the impact of anxiety levels on time estimation and passage of time judgments during public speaking in healthy adults. Participants were recruited fro...

Psychological wellbeing in parents of children with Down syndrome: A systematic review and meta-analysis
We report a review examining the psychological wellbeing of parents of children with Down syndrome (DS) relative to that of parents of typically developing (TD) children. A systematic search identified 57 relevant studies, which were synthesised meta-analytically. Relative to their counterparts with TD children, mothers and fathers of children with DS reported higher levels of parenting stress (mothers: g = 0.57, 95% CI [0.33, 0.81]; fathers: g = 0.40, [0.24, 0.56]), depressive symptoms (mothers: g = 0.42, [0.23, 0.61]; fathers: g = 0.25, [0.02, 0.48]) and psychological distress (mothers: g = 0.45, [0.30, 0.60]; fathers: g...

Validity of the distress tolerance inventory in predicting response to the Cold-Pressor Test
Cogn Behav Ther. 2024 Apr 23:1-16. doi: 10.1080/16506073.2024.2333963. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDistress intolerance-a broad band dispositional variable has been shown to serve as a transdiagnostic risk factor for psychopathology. We investigated the predictive validity of the physical and emotional subscales of the Distress Tolerance Inventory (DTI) on behavioral responding (immersion time) and moment-to-moment subjective distress ratings to the Cold-Pressor Test. College students (N = 134) completed self-report questionnaires indexing physical and emotional distress tolerance and then completed a cold pressor challe...

TNFRSF6 induces mitochondrial dysfunction and microglia activation in the in vivo and in vitro models of sepsis-associated encephalopathy
This study aimed to explore TNFRSF6 function in SAE. The SAE mouse model was established by intraperitoneal injection of LPS in TNFRSF6-/- mice and C57BL/6J mice. Microglia were treated with LPS to establish the cell model. The learning, memory and cognitive functions in mice were tested by behavioral tests. Nissl staining was utilized for determining neuronal injury. Microglial activation was tested by immunofluorescence assay. ELISA was utilized for determining TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-10 contents. Mitochondrial dysfunction was measured by mitochondrial oxygen consumption, ATP content, ROS production, and JC-1 assay....

Tool or Tyrant: Guiding and Guarding Generative Artificial Intelligence Use in Nursing Education
This article presents a narrative exploring the implementation of generative AI in nursing education and offers a guide for its strategic use. The exploration begins with an examination of the broader societal impact and uses of artificial intelligence, recognizing its pervasive presence and the potential it holds. Thematic analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats collected from nurse educators across the southeastern United States in this case-based descriptive study used four codes: time, innovation, critical thinking, and routine tasks. Findings from the qualitative analysis revealed the overarching...

Dynamic skin behaviors in cephalopods
Curr Opin Neurobiol. 2024 Apr 22;86:102876. doi: 10.1016/j.conb.2024.102876. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe coleoid cephalopods (cuttlefish, octopus, and squid) are a group of soft-bodied mollusks that exhibit a wealth of complex behaviors, including dynamic camouflage, object mimicry, skin-based visual communication, and dynamic body patterns during sleep. Many of these behaviors are visually driven and engage the animals' color changing skin, a pixelated display that is directly controlled by neurons projecting from the brain. Thus, cephalopod skin provides a direct readout of neural activity in the brain. During camo...

Mapping semantic space: Exploring the higher-order structure of word meaning
Cognition. 2024 Apr 22;248:105794. doi: 10.1016/j.cognition.2024.105794. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMultiple representation theories posit that concepts are represented via a combination of properties derived from sensorimotor, affective, and linguistic experiences. Recently, it has been proposed that information derived from social experience, or socialness, represents another key aspect of conceptual representation. How these various dimensions interact to form a coherent conceptual space has yet to be fully explored. To address this, we capitalized on openly available word property norms for 6339 words and conducted ...

Testosterone, gender identity and gender-stereotyped personality attributes
In this study, we explored the relationships between testosterone, gender identity, and gender stereotyped personality attributes in a sample of over 400 university students (65 % female assigned at birth). Participants provided ratings of their self-perceived masculinity and femininity, resulting in a continuous measure of gender identity, and a set of agentic and communal personality attributes. A saliva sample was also provided for assay of basal testosterone. Results showed no compelling evidence that basal testosterone correlates with gender-stereotyped personality attributes or explains the relationship between sex/g...

A machine learning approach to predict mortality due to immune-mediated thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura
CONCLUSION: The USTMA Mortality Index was acceptable for predicting mortality due to acute iTTP in the USTMA registry, but not sensitive enough to rule out death. Identifying patients at high risk of iTTP-related mortality may help individualize care and ultimately improve iTTP survival outcomes. Further studies are needed to provide external validation. Our model is one of many recent examples where machine learning models may show promise in clinical prediction tools in healthcare.PMID:38651093 | PMC:PMC11033197 | DOI:10.1016/j.rpth.2024.102388 (Source: Thrombosis and Haemostasis)
