Mortality rate after total knee arthroplasty or total hip arthroplasty in patients with a history of liver transplant
World J Orthop. 2024 Apr 18;15(4):310-311. doi: 10.5312/wjo.v15.i4.310. eCollection 2024 Apr 18.ABSTRACTIn this editorial I comment on the article by Ahmed et al published in a recent issue of the World J Orthop 2023; 14: 784-790. It is well known that patients who have undergone a liver transplant (LT) may need to have a total hip arthroplasty (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA) implanted. Ahmed et al stated that the mortality rate in these patients was similar to the one of the general population. However, there are three articles previously published that found higher mortality in LT patients who experienced THA/TKA ...

Current status of liver transplantation for human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients in mainland China
This study provides an overview of the current landscape of HIV-positive patients receiving liver transplantation (LT) in mainland China. To date, our transplant center has conducted LT for eight end-stage liver disease patients co-infected with HIV, and all but one, who died two months postoperatively due to sepsis and progressive multi-organ failure, have survived. Comparative analysis with hepatitis B virus-infected patients during the same period revealed no statistically significant differences in acute rejection reactions, cytomegalovirus infection, bacteremia, pulmonary infections, acute kidney injury, new-onset can...

Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in Sickle Cell Disease: A Multidimentional Review
Cell Transplant. 2024 Jan-Dec;33:9636897241246351. doi: 10.1177/09636897241246351.ABSTRACTWhile exagamglogene autotemcel (Casgevy) and lovotibeglogene autotemcel (Lyfgenia) have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as the first cell-based gene therapies for the treatment of patients 12 years of age and older with sickle cell disease (SCD), this treatment is not universally accessible. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) has the potential to eradicate the symptoms of patients with SCD, but a significant obstacle in HSCT for SCD is the availability of suitable donors, particularly human...

Effect of pre-transplantation use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor or angiotensin receptor blocker in kidney transplant recipients-propensity score-matched analysis
CONCLUSIONS: In KT, the preoperative use of ACEi/ARBs did not significantly affect clinical outcomes including delayed graft function, postoperative renal function, hyperkalemia events, incidence of rejection, and graft survival rates compared to the patients who did not receive ACEi/ARBs.PMID:38684638 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-024-01938-3 (Source: Journal of Nephrology)

Acute respiratory failure due to pulmonary exacerbation in children with cystic fibrosis admitted in a pediatric intensive care unit: outcomes and factors associated with mortality
CONCLUSION: Children with CF admitted to PICU for acute respiratory failure secondary to pulmonary exacerbations are at high risk of death, both in the short and medium terms. Lung transplant is their main chance of survival and should be considered early.PMID:38685088 | PMC:PMC11059703 | DOI:10.1186/s12931-024-02778-2 (Source: Respiratory Care)
