Improving Kidney Transplant Rates in Obese CKD Patients by Sleeve Gastrectomy
Obesity is a central obstacle to health and wellness in people with chronic kidney disease (CKD). It is linked to progression of CKD, a greater burden of disease and disability, and reduced access to kidney transplant.1-3 Moreover, obesity is a common condition in CKD, being seen in nearly 50% of individuals with CKD stages 3 and 4.4 As a highly prevalent and major risk factor for adverse outcomes, obesity has been receiving increasing attention from the nephrology community as an urgent problem that needs addressing. Does Antibiotic Use Increase the Risk of Post-Transplantation Diabetes Mellitus? A Retrospective Study of Renal Transplant Patients
CONCLUSIONS In addition to age, BMI, and TAC concentration after RT, antibiotic use may be a novel factor affecting PTDM. The use of antibiotics may influence the development of PTDM.PMID:38685698 | DOI:10.12659/AOT.943282 (Source: Annals of Transplantation)

ECMO Bridge to Lung Transplant in Children with Idiopathic Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension
AbstractIdiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) represents an important clinical indication for lung transplant (LTx) in children. Recent trends show fewer children with IPAH are undergoing LTx nowadays compared to previous time periods, including those with most severe form of the disease. Using the UNOS Registry, we investigated if ECMO at the time of transplant impacts post-transplant survival in children with IPAH. A total of 74 LTx recipients while on ECMO at the time of transplant were identified (IPAH: N  = 12). Children with IPAH who underwent LTx while on ECMO had shown comparable survival rates to tho...

The International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT): 2024 infection definitions for durable and acute mechanical circulatory support devices
Infections remain a significant concern in patients receiving mechanical circulatory support (MCS), encompassing both durable and acute devices. This consensus manuscript provides updated definitions for infections associated with durable MCS devices and new definitions for infections in acute MCS, integrating a comprehensive review of existing literature and collaborative discussions among multidisciplinary specialists. By establishing consensus definitions, we seek to enhance clinical care, facilitate consistent reporting in research studies, and ultimately improve outcomes for patients receiving MCS. Pulmonary Alveolar Microlithiasis in a Patient Requiring Allotransplant
A woman in her late-50s with a 3-year history of progressive hypoxemic respiratory failure, severe pulmonary hypertension, and right ventricular dysfunction was referred for lung transplant assessment. She noted persistent cough and dyspnea on exertion. Pulmonary function testing demonstrated a severe restrictive defect. High-resolution computed tomography of the thorax showed bilateral diffuse interlobular and intralobular septal thickening and ground-glass opacities with extensive calcific deposits (Figure  1). Mortality rate after total knee arthroplasty or total hip arthroplasty in patients with a history of liver transplant
World J Orthop. 2024 Apr 18;15(4):310-311. doi: 10.5312/wjo.v15.i4.310. eCollection 2024 Apr 18.ABSTRACTIn this editorial I comment on the article by Ahmed et al published in a recent issue of the World J Orthop 2023; 14: 784-790. It is well known that patients who have undergone a liver transplant (LT) may need to have a total hip arthroplasty (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA) implanted. Ahmed et al stated that the mortality rate in these patients was similar to the one of the general population. However, there are three articles previously published that found higher mortality in LT patients who experienced THA/TKA ...

Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in Sickle Cell Disease: A Multidimentional Review
Cell Transplant. 2024 Jan-Dec;33:9636897241246351. doi: 10.1177/09636897241246351.ABSTRACTWhile exagamglogene autotemcel (Casgevy) and lovotibeglogene autotemcel (Lyfgenia) have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as the first cell-based gene therapies for the treatment of patients 12 years of age and older with sickle cell disease (SCD), this treatment is not universally accessible. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) has the potential to eradicate the symptoms of patients with SCD, but a significant obstacle in HSCT for SCD is the availability of suitable donors, particularly human...
