Early recovery of natural killer cells post T-cell depleted allogeneic stem cell transplantation using alemtuzumab "in the bag"
CONCLUSION: This study of ex vivo T-cell depleted SCT's demonstrates that NK cells recover quicker when compared to those receiving unfractionated grafts. These results may have implications for GvHD and the GvL effect which warrants further study.PMID:38641148 | DOI:10.1016/j.trim.2024.102045 (Source: Transplant Immunology)

Beyond prevention: Unveiling the benefits of triple vaccination on COVID-19 severity and resource utilization in solid organ transplant recipients
CONCLUSION: In solid organ transplant recipients with COVID-19, triple vaccination, but not double vaccination, against SARS-CoV-2 was associated with significantly less hospital resource utilization, decreased disease severity, and fewer short-term complications. These real-world data from extensively matched controls support the protective effects of COVID-19 vaccination with boosters in this vulnerable population.PMID:38641149 | DOI:10.1016/j.trim.2024.102048 (Source: Transplant Immunology)

Development and validation of a novel nomogram model for predicting delayed graft function in deceased donor kidney transplantation based on pre-transplant biopsies
Delayed graft function (DGF) is an important complication after kidney transplantation surgery. The present study aimed to develop and validate a nomogram for preoperative prediction of DGF on the basis of cli... (Source: BMC Nephrology)

Trends, Outcomes, and Evaluation of the Older Living Kidney Donor
AbstractPurpose of ReviewWe aim to review trends, donor and recipient outcomes, and considerations in the evaluation of older living kidney donors (LD).Recent FindingsOlder donors comprise a small but growing proportion of LDs. Aging is associated with nephrosclerosis, nephron loss, and a physiologic decline in kidney function. Importantly, living donor outcomes are favorable, with older LDs having similar mortality to age-matched healthy older non-donors, a lower lifetime risk of ESKD than younger LDs, and preserved quality of life. Allograft survival of LDKT from older LDs is also acceptable, and recipient survival is be...

The Role of Ultrasound in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Meniscal Injuries
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThis review evaluates the current understanding of the role of ultrasound in the diagnosis and treatment of meniscal disorders.Recent FindingsUltrasound (US) demonstrates similar sensitivity and specificity when compared to magnetic resonance imaging in the evaluation of meniscal injuries when compared to arthroscopy. Meniscal extrusion (ME) under US can be a reliable metric to evaluate for meniscal root tears in knees with and without osteoarthritis (OA). Sonographic ME is associated with development of OA in knees without OA. US following allograft meniscal transplant may be useful in predicting ...

Randomized clinical trial of non-antibiotic prophylaxis with d-Mannose plus Proanthocyanidins vs. Proanthocyanidins alone for urinary tract infections and asymptomatic bacteriuria in de novo kidney transplant recipients: The Manotras study
CONCLUSIONS: Non-antibiotic therapy is an unmet need to prevent UTI after kidney transplantation; however, the use of d-Mannose plus PAC does not seem capable to prevent it.PMID:38637262 | DOI:10.1016/j.nefroe.2024.02.011 (Source: Nefrologia : publicacion oficial de la Sociedad Espanola Nefrologia)

The association of socioeconomic status on kidney transplant access and outcomes: a nationwide cohort study in Taiwan
CONCLUSION: A relevant disparity exists in accessing kidney transplantation in Taiwan, depending on individual and neighborhood socioeconomic status. However, results post transplantation were not different after five years. Improved access to waitlisting, education, and welfare support may reduce disparities.PMID:38635122 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-024-01928-5 (Source: Journal of Nephrology)

A Prognostic Survival Model Incorporating Patient-Reported Outcomes for Transplant-Ineligible Patients With Multiple Myeloma
Oncologist. 2024 Apr 18:oyae041. doi: 10.1093/oncolo/oyae041. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDeveloping prognostic tools specifically for patients themselves represents an important step in empowering patients to engage in shared decision-making. Incorporating patient-reported outcomes may improve the accuracy of these prognostic tools. We conducted a retrospective population-based study of transplant-ineligible (TIE) patients with multiple myeloma (MM) diagnosed between January 2007 and December 2018. A multivariable Cox regression model was developed to predict the risk of death within 1-year period from the index date. W...
