A current overview of the pharmacological composition of “La Chimique” consumed in Mayotte: Preliminary results of the CHASSE‐MAREE protocol
Mayotte Island, a French department, has for several years been faced with the consumption of a drug called “La Chimique.” The CHASSE-MAREE protocol aims to assess the composition of “La Chimique” products through successive sample collection campaigns. The first analytical results (80 samples collected in 2022) revealed that, as suspected, the main psychoactive constituents of this drug are SCRAs . This overview of SCRAs often includes associations and seems to vary from month to month and according to geographical location. AbstractMayotte Island, a French department located in the Mozambique Channel, has for sev...

Bioinspired Adhesive Antibacterial Hydrogel with Self-Healing and On-Demand Removability for Enhanced Full-Thickness Skin Wound Repair
Biomacromolecules. 2023 Oct 6. doi: 10.1021/acs.biomac.3c00576. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAdhesive-caused injury is a great threat for extensive full-thickness skin trauma because extra-strong adhesion can incur unbearable pain and exacerbate trauma upon removal. Herein, inspired by the mussel, we designed and fabricated an adhesive antibacterial hydrogel dressing based on dynamic host-guest interaction that enabled on-demand stimuli-triggered removal to effectively care for wounds. In contrast with most hard-to-removable dressing, this adhesive antibacterial hydrogel exhibited strong adhesion property (85 kPa), which ...

Prognostication in Prolonged and Chronic Disorders of Consciousness
Semin Neurol DOI: 10.1055/s-0043-1775792Patients with prolonged disorders of consciousness (DOCs) longer than 28 days may continue to make significant gains and achieve functional recovery. Occasionally, this recovery trajectory may extend past 3 (for nontraumatic etiologies) and 12 months (for traumatic etiologies) into the chronic period. Prognosis is influenced by several factors including state of DOC, etiology, and demographics. There are several testing modalities that may aid prognostication under active investigation including electroencephalography, functional and anatomic magnetic resonance imaging, and event-rel...

Revisiting the pK < sub > a < /sub > -Flux method for determining intrinsic membrane permeability
Eur J Pharm Sci. 2023 Sep 24:106592. doi: 10.1016/j.ejps.2023.106592. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIntrinsic membrane permeability is one of several factors that critically determine the intestinal absorption of a chemical. The intrinsic membrane permeability of a chemical is usually extracted from transwell experiments with Caco-2 or MDCK cells, preferably by the pKa-Flux method, which is considered the method of choice when aqueous boundary layer effects need to be excluded. The pKa-Flux method has two variants, the iso-pH method, where apical and basolateral pH are equal, and the gradient-pH method, where apical and ba...

Case report on antipsychotic induced catatonia in an incarcerated patient
This report describes a 35-year-old incarcerated Korean-American male with a history of unspecified psychosis who presented for antipsychotic induced catatonia after administration of haloperidol decanoate intramuscular (200 mg across the span of 1 week). Neurologic workup was performed including MRI, lumbar puncture, and electroencephalography. Despite an approximate month long hospitalization, benzodiazepine challenge, benztropine trial, and amantadine adjunct, our patient continued to experience bradykinesia, waxy flexibility, and mask-like facies, and was minimally verbally responsive. Several challenges in the tre...
