Clinically important change on the Unified Dyskinesia Rating Scale among patients with Parkinson's disease experiencing dyskinesia
ConclusionAnchored to the MDS-UPDRS Part IV, item 4.2, an 8-point reduction in the UDysRS total score can be considered an MCIC for PD patients with dyskinesia. (Source: Frontiers in Neurology)

Understanding, detecting, and stimulating consciousness recovery in the ICU
Abstract Coma is a medical and socioeconomic emergency. Although underfunded, research on coma and disorders of consciousness has made impressive progress. Lesion-network-mapping studies have delineated the precise brainstem regions that consistently produce coma when damaged. Functional neuroimaging has revealed how mechanisms like “communication through coherence” and “inhibition by gating” work in synergy to enable cortico-cortical processing and how this information transfer is disrupted in brain injury. On the cellular level, break-down of intracellular communication between the layer 5 pyramidal cell soma ...

Cellular transport of uranium and its cytotoxicity effects on CHO-k1 cells
Ecotoxicol Environ Saf. 2022 Oct 10;246:114166. doi: 10.1016/j.ecoenv.2022.114166. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUranium is a radioactive heavy metal and a significant public health concern; however, its associated underlying toxicological mechanisms remain largely unknown. In this work, the uptake and efflux processes of uranium in CHO-k1 cells were studied and the cytotoxicity effects were explored. It was found that both the uptake and efflux processes took place rapidly and half of the internalized uranium was expelled within 8 h. The uranium exposure caused a decrease of cell viability and adhesion ability in a dose-d...

Design, synthesis, ADME, biological evaluation and molecular dynamic studies of natural and synthetic remedy of Herpes simplex virus type-1
Pak J Pharm Sci. 2022 Jul;35(4(Special)):1181-1190.ABSTRACTGarlic (known as; Allium sativum) is one of the most widely used medicinal plants in the world. Allicin is the major agent of garlic that gives its known pharmacological activities as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antioxidant agent. It could be extracted from bulbs of Allium sativum by water extraction to give allicin in low yield therefore other better methods were followed for extraction such as ultrasonic-assisted method that gives good yield. Attempts to optimize allicin extraction were found with sliced garlic at 25 °C for 90 min...

Case report: Blepharospasm in peak-dose dyskinesia may benefit from amantadine in Parkinson's disease
ConclusionThe current report expands the phenomenology of peak-dose dykinesia in PD to include dystonic blepharospasm. This complication of levodopa therapy may respond to amantadine despite the dystonic appearance of movements. (Source: Frontiers in Neurology)

Improved survival in ICU in severe COVID-19 associated with amantadine use – retrospective study.
Possible immunomodulatory effect of amantadine in patients treated in intensive care units (ICU), mostly among patients with brain injuries or vascular diseases was observed in several studies. Potential antiviral effect of amantadine against SARS CoV-2 was discarded in clinical trials, however immunomodulatory potential was not studied. Objectives: The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of immunomodulatory amantadine therapy on mortality in patients with respiratory insufficiency due to COVID-19 requiring mechanical ventilation in ICU. Improved survival in intensive care unit in severe COVID-19 associated with amantadine use - retrospective study
The first reports on the possible uses of amantadine were published as early as 1960s (Monto and Arden,  1992). Following initial reports on antiviral properties described in 1963, amantadine obtained approval for prophylaxis and treatment of influenza type A viruses infections in 1976 (Hubsher et al., 2012); however, in the following decades it was withdrawn from influenza's treatment recommendatio ns due to universal viral protein M2 resistance (Influenza Antiviral Drug Resistance, 2021). Study of the Effects of Nicotine and Caffeine for the Treatment of Parkinson's Disease
Appl Biochem Biotechnol. 2022 Sep 19. doi: 10.1007/s12010-022-04155-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTParkinson's disease (PD) is considered to be a highly severe neurological disorder. PD occurs due to a decrease in dopamine production by the degeneration of dopamine-secreting neurons. Genetic mutations, environmental toxins and lifestyle are some of the risk factors of the progressive neurodegenerative disorder PD. Parkin protein, which is encoded by the PARK gene, is one of the important proteins, which is one of the causative agents. The Parkin protein has several mutations which lead to the development of the disease. ...
