Etiology and Outcomes of Thrombotic Microangiopathies.
CONCLUSIONS: Secondary thrombotic microangiopathies represent the majority of thrombotic microangiopathies. Multiple thrombotic microangiopathies causes are present in one half of secondary thrombotic microangiopathies. The risks of dialysis, neurologic and cardiac complications, and death vary by the cause of thrombotic microangiopathies. Echocardiographic determination of pulmonary arterial capacitance
AbstractA growing body of evidence has demonstrated that pulmonary arterial capacitance (PAC) is the strongest hemodynamic predictor of clinical outcomes across a wide spectrum of cardiovascular disease, including pulmonary hypertension and heart failure. We hypothesized that a ratio of right ventricular stroke volume (RVOT VTI) to the associated peak arterial systolic pressure (PASP) could function as a reliable non-invasive surrogate for PAC. We performed a prospective study of patients undergoing simultaneous transthoracic echocardiography and right heart catheterization (RHC) for various clinical indications. Measureme...

Effects of Normothermic Machine Perfusion Conditions on Mesenchymal Stromal Cells
In this study the effect of NMP perfusion fluid on survival, metabolism and function of thawed cryopreserved human (h)MSC and porcine (p)MSC in suspension conditions was studied. Suspension conditions reduced the viability of pMSC by 40% in both perfusion fluid and culture medium. Viability of hMSC was reduced by suspension conditions by 15% in perfusion fluid, whilst no differences were found in survival in culture medium. Under adherent conditions, survival of the cells was not affected by perfusion fluid. The perfusion fluid did not affect survival of fresh MSC in suspension compared to the control culture medium. The f...

Plant-Derived Alkaloids: The Promising Disease-Modifying Agents for Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Conclusion This paper summarizes the current findings regarding the anti-colitis activity of plant-derived alkaloids and shows how these alkaloids exhibit significant and beneficial effects in alleviating colonic inflammation. These natural alkaloids are not only promising agents for IBD treatment but are also components for developing new wonder drugs. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms or toxicological evaluation of most plant-derived alkaloids still require much scientific research, and their actual efficacies for IBD patients have not been verified well in field research. Thus, further clinical trials to elu...

The Case | Severe hypertension and hyperkalemia in a kidney transplant recipient
A 55-year-old man with a history of end-stage renal disease due to autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease and bilateral nephrectomy without adrenalectomy underwent his first kidney transplantation after 6 years of hemodialysis. The patient had no history of donor-specific antibodies. The donor was described as a 69-year-old man with a history of active smoking and  aortic valvulopathy who died of a stroke without cardiac arrest or collapse. Maintenance immunosuppressive therapy consisted of low-dose tacrolimus and everolimus.

Hypertension, Arterial Compliance and LVAD Pump Function
Hypertension (HTN) has been implicated as a risk factor for stroke in continuous-flow Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) populations. Active treatment of HTN has been shown to decrease cerebrovascular accident rates in the recent trial. Current guidelines recommend a mean arterial pressure (MAP) of 80mmHg in LVAD patients; however, it is difficult to reliably measure Blood Pressure (BP) in this cohort. Increased BP will further affect pump output since LVAD flows are altered by both preload and afterload.

Physiologically Significant Pulsatility Key to Reducing Adverse Events in CF LVADS
Hypertension is common in continuous flow LVAD (CFLVAD) patients and is linked to major adverse events like stroke and aortic incompetence.

Risk assessment in PAH using quantitative CMR tricuspid regurgitation: relation to heart catheterization
ConclusionsA clear trend towards worse outcome with larger TRV or TR% was shown; however, the number of events was insufficient for significant outcome differences. Prognostic value of quantitative TR should be investigated in a larger multicentre cohort. Effective RV ejection fraction may be considered an improved measure of RV function in PAH.

High molecular weight kininogen contributes to early mortality and kidney dysfunction in a mouse model of sickle cell disease.
CONCLUSIONS: We found elevated plasma levels of cleaved HK in sickle patients compared to healthy controls, suggesting ongoing HK activation in SCD. We used bone marrow transplantation to generate wild type and sickle cell mice on a HK-deficient background. We found that short-term HK deficiency attenuated thrombin generation and inflammation in sickle mice at steady state, which was independent of bradykinin signaling. Moreover, long-term HK deficiency attenuates kidney injury, reduces chronic inflammation, and ultimately improves of sickle mice. PMID: 32573897 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Elevated plasma endocan and BOC in heart failure patients decrease after heart transplantation in association with improved hemodynamics
ConclusionOur results suggest that (i) plasma endocan in HF may reflect the state of pulmonary vascular congestion and PH-LHD, whereas (ii) plasma BOC may reflect the cardiac function and the hemodynamic overload  in HF. The exact role of these proteins and their clinical applicability as biomarkers in HF and PH-LHD ought to be investigated in larger cohorts.

Cardiac and Pulmonary Vascular Risk Stratification in Liver Transplantation
Cardiovascular disease complications are the leading cause of early (short-term) mortality among liver transplant recipients. The increasingly older candidate pool has multiple comorbidities necessitating cardiac and pulmonary vascular disease risk stratification of patients for optimal allocation of scarce donor livers. Arrhythmias, heart failure, stroke, and coronary artery disease are common pretransplant cardiovascular comorbidities and contribute to cardiovascular complications after liver transplant. Valvular heart disease and portopulmonary hypertension present intraoperative challenges during liver transplant surge...

New-onset Post-transplant Diabetes and Therapy in Long-term Survivors After Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
Conclusion: After allo-HSCT, a significant number of patients developed PTDM and patients with acute graft-versus-host-disease were found to have a higher risk for PTDM. Long-term and continuous follow-up for diabetes and cardiovascular risk factors after HSCT is important in order to be able to provide timely and appropriate treatment.

Characteristics and predictors of hospitalization and death in the first 11  122 cases with a positive RT-PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 in Denmark: a nationwide cohort
ConclusionsIn this nationwide population-based COVID-19 study, increasing age and multimorbidity were strongly associated with hospitalization and death. In the absence of co-morbidities, the mortality was, however,<5% until the age of 80  years.
