Deferoxamine Prevents Neonatal Posthemorrhagic Hydrocephalus Through Choroid Plexus-Mediated Iron Clearance
AbstractPosthemorrhagic hydrocephalus occurs in up to 30% of infants with high-grade intraventricular hemorrhage and is associated with the worst neurocognitive outcomes in preterm infants. The mechanisms of posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus after intraventricular hemorrhage are unknown; however, CSF levels of iron metabolic pathway proteins including hemoglobin have been implicated in its pathogenesis. Here, we develop an animal model of intraventricular hemorrhage using intraventricular injection of hemoglobin at post-natal day 4 that results in acute and chronic  hydrocephalus, pathologic choroid plexus iron accumulation, ...

The Prevalence of Iron Deficiency in Atrial Fibrillation: Low Hanging Fruit?
Conclusions: The prevalence of iron deficiency in those with AF appears high and warrants evaluation in a prospective study.PMID:36295652 | PMC:PMC9610053 | DOI:10.3390/medicina58101492

Neurovascular Manifestations of Iron-Deficient Anemia: Narrative Review and Practical Reflections through a Teaching Case
Conclusions: IDA is a common but treatable condition that, independently or synergically, may increase the risk of thrombotic events. The diagnostic and therapeutic approach has not yet been defined, and each case should be individually addressed in a pragmatic clinical road map.PMID:36294407 | DOI:10.3390/jcm11206088

Ferroptosis: A new strategy for traditional Chinese medicine treatment of stroke
Biomed Pharmacother. 2022 Oct 10;156:113806. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2022.113806. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStroke is a serious threat to human survival and health due to its high morbidity and mortality. The pathological mechanism of stroke is complex and involves various regulated cell death (RCD) modalities such as autophagy, apoptosis and necroptosis. ferroptosis, a novel form of RCD characterised by iron-dependent accumulation of lipid peroxides and reactive oxygen radicals, has been found to be closely associated with the prognosis and outcome of stroke. At the same time, ferroptosis is also associated with other f...
