Design and rationale of the Edoxaban Treatment in routiNe clinical prActice for patients with Atrial Fibrillation in Europe (ETNA-AF-Europe) study
This study details the design of the Edoxaban Treatment in routiNe clinical prActice for patients with Atrial Fibrillation in Europe (ETNA-AF-Europe) study – a postauthorization observational study, which is part of the postapproval plan for edoxaban agreed with the European Medicines Agency. Methods The ETNA-AF-Europe study (Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT02944019) is a multicenter, prospective, observational study that enrolled 13 980 patients with atrial fibrillation treated with edoxaban from 852 sites across 10 European countries (Austria, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland,...

Development and Validation of a Dementia Risk Prediction Model in the General Population: An Analysis of Three Longitudinal Studies.
CONCLUSIONS:: In community-dwelling individuals, 10-year dementia risk can be accurately predicted by combining information on readily available predictors in the primary care setting. Dementia prediction can be further improved by using data on cognitive performance, genotyping, and brain imaging. These models can be used to identify individuals at high risk of dementia in the population and are able to inform trial design. PMID: 30525906 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Safety and Outcome of Endovascular Treatment for Minor Ischemic Stroke: Results From the Multicenter Clinical Registry of Endovascular Treatment of Acute Ischemic Stroke in the Netherlands
Goal: Insufficient data is available about safety and efficacy of endovascular treatment (EVT) in patients with minor stroke symptoms because these patients were excluded from most randomized trials. We aimed to compare characteristics, functional outcome, and complications in patients with minor ischemic stroke National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score ≤5 (NIHSS score ≤5) and moderate to severe ischemic stroke (NIHSS score ≥6) due to intracranial proximal artery occlusion of the anterior circulation who underwent EVT.

Nurse-staffing level and quality of acute care services: Evidence from cross-national panel data analysis in OECD countries
ConclusionA higher proportion of nurses-staffing level is associated with better performance of acute care services in OECD countries. Also, the nursing characteristics of Sweden, Denmark, Canada, Netherlands, Finland, Switzerland, Australia and United States would be good patterns for other countries to maximize nursing outcomes in the care of patients with acute and life-threatening conditions by reducing the risk of complication, mortality and adverse clinical outcomes.

Impact of Ischemic Lesion Location on the mRS Score in Patients with Ischemic Stroke: A Voxel-Based Approach ADULT BRAIN
CONCLUSIONS: Our study confirms that infarct location has an important impact on functional outcome of patients with stroke and should be considered in prediction models. After we adjusted for covariates, the left-hemispheric corticosubcortical fiber tracts seemed to be of higher functional importance compared with cortical lesions.

Psychometric properties of the Dutch SAQOL-39NL in a generic stroke population.
CONCLUSIONS: These data provide further evidence for the acceptability, internal consistency, and initial promising data on validity of the SAQOL-39NLg. Further research on structural validity and responsiveness to change is needed. PMID: 30380373 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Why the uptake of eRehabilitation programs in stroke care is so difficult —a focus group study in the Netherlands
The uptake of eRehabilitation programs in stroke care is insufficient, despite the growing availability. The aim of this study was to explore which factors influence the uptake of eRehabilitation in stroke reh...

Innovation of the governance of integrated care
Aim: Interest in integrated care is growing. This is reflected in the rising numbers of scientific publications, IJIC ’s increased impact factor and the increasing number of participants at IFIC’s international conferences. It is stimulating to see that organizations like the World Health Organisation are developing conceptual frameworks that embrace integrated care [1,2]. At the same time we know that integrat ed care does not become reality automatically; it takes a long timeframe. That can be conflicting with ambitions like ‘implementing good practices as fast as possible’ and with the pressure to deliver result...

Comparison of outcome in stroke patients admitted during working hours vs. off-hours; a single-center cohort study
Discussion and conclusionsThe overall outcome of stroke patients admitted to a large Dutch teaching hospital is not influenced by time of admission. When studying OH effects, adjustment for disease severity and poor prognostic findings on imaging is crucial before drawing conclusions on staffing and material.

Of Cardiac Holes and Crew Leaders
I enjoyed reading, and learned a lot from, Drs. Dalen and Alpert's article1 on closure of a foramen ovale to prevent cryptogenic stroke. It is a timely review that organizes evidence that, until now, had been somewhat confusing. In the article, the word foramen (from the Latin forare, meaning to pierce or bore a hole) was meant to appear 61 times. Unfortunately, it was mistakenly replaced by the word foremen (from the Dutch voormen, meaning the leaders of work crews, usually men, or the spokesmen for juries) on 27 of the 61 occasions.

Association of Low Urinary Sodium Excretion With Increased Risk of Stroke
We examined the association of urinary sodium excretion (UNaV) as an accurate estimate of intake with risk of stroke. We studied 7330 individuals free of cardiovascular events at baseline in the Prevention of Renal and Vascular End-stage Disease (PREVEND) study, a prospective, population-based cohort of Dutch men and women.
