Melatonin Supplementation Reduces Nighttime Blood Pressure But Does Not Affect Blood Pressure Reactivity in Normotensive Adults on a High Sodium Diet
In conclusion, melatonin supplementation did not alter BP reactivity to the perturbations tested on a HSD but may be beneficial in lowering BP in young healthy normotensive adults.PMID:37642281 | DOI:10.1152/ajpregu.00101.2023

Protective effects of exogenous melatonin therapy against oxidative stress to male reproductive tissue caused by anti-cancer chemical and radiation therapy: a systematic review and meta-analysis of animal studies
ConclusionIn male rodents, melatonin therapy was related to improved testicular histopathology, reproductive hormones, testis and body weights, and reduced levels of oxidative markers in testicular tissues of male rodents. Future meticulous studies are recommended to provide a robust scientific backbone for human applications.Systematic review registrationhttps://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/display_record.php?ID=CRD42022355293, identifier CRD42022355293.

Potential Use of Antioxidant Compounds for the Treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Pharmaceuticals (Basel). 2023 Aug 14;16(8):1150. doi: 10.3390/ph16081150.ABSTRACTSince inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are chronic, the development of new effective therapeutics to combat them does not lose relevance. Oxidative stress is one of the main pathological processes that determines the progression of IBD. In this regard, antioxidant therapy seems to be a promising approach. The role of oxidative stress in the development and progression of IBD is considered in detail in this review. The main cause of oxidative stress in IBD is an inadequate response of leukocytes to dysbiosis and food components in the intesti...

Melatonin alleviates intrarenal CaOx crystals deposition through inhibiting LPS-induced non-canonical inflammasome-mediated renal tubular epithelial cells pyroptosis
This study aimed to explore the role of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), an important component of Gram-negative bacteria, on CaOx nephrolithiasis formation and antagonistic effect of melatonin. Male C57BL/6 mice were intraperitoneally injected with glyoxylate acid (80 mg/kg) daily for 7 days to construct CaOx nephrolithiasis model. A single dose of LPS (2.0 mg/kg) was given 2 h before the second glyoxylate acid treatment in the presence or absence of melatonin (25 mg/kg). Our results found that LPS promoted adhesion of CaOx crystals to renal tubular epithelial cells (RTECs) and intrarenal CaOx crystals deposition. Protein levels...

Melatonin ameliorates atherosclerosis by suppressing S100a9-mediated vascular inflammation
Eur J Pharmacol. 2023 Aug 23:175965. doi: 10.1016/j.ejphar.2023.175965. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis (AS)-associated cardiovascular diseases are predominant causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Melatonin, a circadian hormone with anti-inflammatory activity, may be a novel therapeutic intervention for AS. However, the exact mechanism is unclear. This research intended to investigate the mechanism of melatonin in treating AS. Melatonin (20 mg/kg/d) was intraperitoneally administered in a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced AS model using apolipoprotein E-deficient (ApoE-/-) mice for 12 weeks. Immunohistochem...

Melatonin ameliorates histone modification disorders in mammalian aged oocytes by neutralizing the alkylation of HDAC1
Free Radic Biol Med. 2023 Aug 23:S0891-5849(23)00603-2. doi: 10.1016/j.freeradbiomed.2023.08.023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAging-associated histone modification changes in oocytes have been sporadically reported, but the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we systematically characterize multiple histone modifications in oocytes during aging. We find that maternal and postovulatory aging markedly alter the status of histone modifications, specifically H4K12ac and H3K4me3, in both mouse and porcine oocytes. Meanwhile, we identify a substantial reduction in HDAC1 (histone deacetylase 1) protein in aged oocytes, w...
