Seasonal light hours modulate peripheral clocks and energy metabolism in mice
Cell Metab. 2023 Sep 1:S1550-4131(23)00300-5. doi: 10.1016/j.cmet.2023.08.005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExcept for latitudes close to the equator, seasonal variation in light hours can change dramatically between summer and winter. Yet investigations into the interplay between energy metabolism and circadian rhythms typically use a 12 h light:12 h dark photoperiod corresponding to the light duration at the equator. We hypothesized that altering the seasonal photoperiod affects both the rhythmicity of peripheral tissue clocks and energy homeostasis. Mice were housed at photoperiods representing either light hours in su...

Development of an impedimetric sensor for susceptible detection of melatonin at picomolar concentrations in diverse pharmaceutical and human specimens
Environ Res. 2023 Sep 6:117080. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2023.117080. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOur investigation aimed to create and manufacture an electrochemical impedance sensor with the purpose of improving the detection efficiency of melatonin (ME). To achieve this objective, we employed gold nanoparticles coated on polydopamine formed in glassy carbon electrodes (AuNPs/PDA/GCE) as a means to enhance the sensor's capabilities. A novel approach employing the signal-off strategy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique was utilized to determine ME. When the AuNPs/PDA/GCE electrode was immersed in a b...

Plasma melatonin concentration during the early post-partum period in Thoroughbred mares and their foals
Acta Vet Hung. 2023 Sep 6. doi: 10.1556/004.2023.00883. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe authors aimed to determine the plasma melatonin concentration in mares and their new-born foals in the early post-partum period. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein of 53 mare-foal pairs within twelve hours after parturition. Plasma melatonin levels were measured by ELISA. The melatonin concentration, adjusted for the moment of parturition using a generalised linear model, was 34.58 pg mL-1 in mares. It was significantly lower (27.63 pg mL-1) in the new-born foals. However, the melatonin concentration declined different...

Proteomic Analysis Reveals the Neurotoxic Effects of Chronic Methamphetamine Self-Administration-Induced Cognitive Impairments and the Role of Melatonin-Enhanced Restorative Process during Methamphetamine Withdrawal
J Proteome Res. 2023 Sep 7. doi: 10.1021/acs.jproteome.3c00502. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCognitive flexibility is a crucial ability in humans that can be affected by chronic methamphetamine (METH) addiction. The present study aimed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying cognitive impairment in mice chronically administered METH via an oral self-administration method. Further, the effect of melatonin treatment on recovery of METH-induced cognitive impairment was also investigated. Cognitive performance of the mice was assessed using an attentional set shift task (ASST), and possible underlying neurotoxic mechanisms wer...
