Opinion & Special Articles: Professionalism in neurology: Maintaining patient rapport in a world of EMR
Health information technology is playing a critical role in fostering more efficient and effective health care systems by improving how information is recorded, organized, and exchanged through the use of electronic medical records (EMR). EMR are defined, according to the International Organization for Standardization, as "repositories of patient data in digital form, stored and exchanged securely, and accessible by multiple authorized users. They contain retrospective, concurrent, and prospective information, and their primary purpose is to support continuing, efficient, and quality integrated healthcare."1

Infodemiology of autoimmune encephalitis, autoimmune seizures, and autoimmune epilepsy: An analysis of online search behavior using Google Trends
CONCLUSIONS: This study showed an uptrend in the online search interest on autoimmune encephalitis, autoimmune seizures, and autoimmune epilepsy over time, which may reflect the increased awareness of the condition by the public and the medical community. Information on online health information-seeking behavior may be obtained from Google Trends data despite its limitations.PMID:35623205 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2022.108730

The relationship between the subjective experience of real-world cognitive failures and objective target-detection performance in visual search
Cognition. 2021 Sep 27;217:104914. doi: 10.1016/j.cognition.2021.104914. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVisual search is a common occurrence in everyday life, such as searching for the location of keys, identifying a friend in a crowd, or scanning an upcoming intersection for hazards while driving. Visual search is also used in professional contexts, such as medical diagnostic imaging and airport baggage screening. These contexts are often characterised by low-prevalence or rare targets. Here we tested whether individual differences in the detection of targets in visual search could be predicted from variables derived from ...

Deficiencies in concussion education in Canadian medical schools.
CONCLUSION: We found deficiencies in the concussion education curriculum provided in the majority of Canadian medical schools. To address this issue, we recommend that all medical schools should, at a minimum, include a one-hour formal concussion-specific teaching session in an early year of their curriculum to be followed by clinical exposure to concussed patients in the later years of medical school. Future studies will be necessary to evaluate if these recommended curricular enhancements are effective in remedying the reported gaps in physicians' concussion knowledge and whether the improved curriculum translates into b...

Epilepsy: social media and the Internet. {inverted question}To search or not to search? (P3.233)
Conclusions:The media and social networks are transcendent tools but their use should be responsible and regulated. While about 70% of those surveyed seek for information about epilepsy, 31.9% are aware that there is information provided by official agencies and about 50% of them control the information obtained with their neurologist. This should encourage clinicians to maximize efforts for more and better disclosure of information.Disclosure: Dr. Thomson has nothing to disclose. Dr. Molina Melendres has nothing to disclose. Migraine Screening in Primary Eye Care Practice: Current Behaviors and the Impact of Clinician Education.
CONCLUSIONS: From our initial cross-sectional survey, we conclude that optometrists do not currently use validated screening tools for migraine and as such, there is an opportunity for continuing professional development in this area. Our follow-up cohort study demonstrates that educating optometrists on the importance and utility of a validated migraine screening tool is achievable with a relatively simple, low-time investment intervention (an online educational video). Such education may result in improved identification of migraine, which may lead to improved management. PMID: 32767768 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Stroke Education for Multidisciplinary Medical Personnel in a Rural Area of Japan for Promotion of Hospital Visit of Acute Stroke Patients
Conclusions: Our stroke education method using the FAST mnemonic designed for multidisciplinary medical personnel improved their stroke knowledge. Reorganization of the management of acute stroke and greater stroke knowledge for medical staff are necessary to increase the visits of acute stroke patients in the rural areas.

Ocular Fundus Photography as an Educational Tool
Semin Neurol 2015; 35: 496-505DOI: 10.1055/s-0035-1563572The proficiency of nonophthalmologists with direct ophthalmoscopy is poor, which has prompted a search for alternative technologies to examine the ocular fundus. Although ocular fundus photography has existed for decades, its use has been traditionally restricted to ophthalmology clinical care settings and textbooks. Recent research has shown a role for nonmydriatic fundus photography in nonophthalmic settings, encouraging more widespread adoption of fundus photography technology. Recent studies have also affirmed the role of fundus photography as an adjunct or alter...

Education for patients with fibromyalgia. A systematic review of randomised clinical trials.
CONCLUSIONS: Patient education in itself has not proved to be effective for pain, quality of life or functionality in patients with fibromyalgia. There is strong evidence, however, of the effectiveness of combining patient education with exercise and active strategies for coping with pain, quality of life and functionality in the short, medium and long term in patients with fibromyalgia. Medical Undergraduate Survey on Headache Education in Singapore: Knowledge, Perceptions, and Assessment of Unmet Needs.
CONCLUSIONS: The current medical undergraduate curriculum on headache disorders in Singapore may harbor significant unmet needs. A review of the syllabus to increase headache education may be one method to address this gap. Further studies in this area are required. PMID: 28488294 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Traumatic brain injury education for adult patients and families: a scoping review.
Authors: Hart T, Driver S, Sander A, Pappadis M, Dams-O'Connor K, Bocage C, Hinkens E, Dahdah MN, Cai X Abstract Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is increasingly viewed as a chronic condition, bringing long-term needs for patient and caregiver knowledge pertaining to symptom and problem management over time. In light of these needs, we performed a scoping review of the literature on brain injury education provided to adult patients and/ or family members affected by TBI. Objectives were to describe the types of educational interventions that have been developed; to review the effects of these interventions; and to dete...
