Aphasia in neurology practice: A survey about perceptions and practices
Conclusion: The thrust areas, pertaining to gaps in perception and practices identified through this study, can be viewed as “an in-time input.” We hope that changes in some of the perceptions and practices can be attained through an emphasis on education and training at multiple levels right from the undergraduate to the practicing physicians. A few more themes and domains will need advocacy actions targeted to different stakeholders.

Quality guidelines for presurgical epilepsy diagnosis and operative epilepsy therapy : 1st revised version.
Abstract In patients with pharmacorefractory epilepsy, preoperative epilepsy evaluation and subsequent epilepsy surgery lead to a significant improvement of seizure control, proportion of seizure-free patients, quality of life and social participation. The aims of preoperative epilepsy evaluation are to define the chance of complete seizure freedom and the likelihood of inducing new neurological deficits in a given patient. As epilepsy surgery is an elective procedure quality standards are particularly high. As detailed in the first edition of these practice guidelines, quality control relates to seven different d...

Attitudes towards neurology among medical undergraduates.
Abstract Diseases of the nervous system are an important contributor to clinical and social problems. Therefore there is a need to provide undergraduates and postgraduates of medical faculties with adequate training in neurology. However, many shortcomings have been observed in this field, often associated with students' negative perception of neurology. The aim of this study was to explore attitudes towards neurology amongst undergraduates of the medical faculty at Wroclaw Medical University, and the reasons for these attitudes. As a qualitative component of the study, a focus group discussion was conducted with ...

EEG interpretation reliability and interpreter confidence: A large single-center study.
Abstract The intrarater and interrater reliability (I&IR) of EEG interpretation has significant implications for the value of EEG as a diagnostic tool. We measured both the intrarater reliability and the interrater reliability of EEG interpretation based on the interpretation of complete EEGs into standard diagnostic categories and rater confidence in their interpretations and investigated sources of variance in EEG interpretations. During two distinct time intervals, six board-certified clinical neurophysiologists classified 300 EEGs into one or more of seven diagnostic categories and assigned a subjective co...

Clinical routine use of dopamine transporter imaging in 516 consecutive patients
Abstract [123I]-FP-CIT is a single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) ligand showing in vivo the loss of dopaminergic terminals in the brain and is now available in the market. Despite several systematic studies in clinically inconclusive cases, the use of such imaging in clinical routine is scarcely reported. We analyzed 516 files of subjects with movement disorders who were consecutively examined using [123I]-FP-CIT scan and determined whether the use of imaging was appropriate and if it improved clinical diagnosis or care of the patient. In addition, we determined if appropriate use was related to subs...

Improving your genetic literacy in epilepsy—A new series
Summary Advances in epilepsy genetics have been rapid, and it is challenging for clinicians on the ground to keep pace with these advances. The International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) Genetics Commission has thus crafted a new Genetic Literacy series targeted at busy clinicians. Our goal is to help provide a concise, accessible resource on epilepsy genetics for the busy, on‐the‐ground clinician so that he/she can apply that knowledge at point‐of‐care to help patients. This new series is grounded in educational theories and evidence to ensure that learning is effective and efficient. We hope that by promoting a...

Ask a Neurologist: What Primary Care Providers want to know, and the potential for reducing referrals through eConsults (P2.184)
Conclusions:We found that an eConsult service provides timely access to neurologists and can divert half of intended face-to-face consultations. The most common questions posed by PCPs regarded diagnosis and drug therapy of headaches, seizures, altered sensation and CVD. eConsults services could provide guidance for continuing medical education planning in neurology.Disclosure: Dr. Bradi has nothing to disclose. Lifting the burden of headache in China: managing migraine in a SMART way
AbstractWith support fromLifting The Burden, a UK-registered charitable organization, a nationwide survey of headache disorders in the Chinese adult population was conducted in 2008 –2009. This project, which was within the Global Campaign against Headache, showed that headache disorders have a major adverse impact on public health in China. Subsequently, as essential support for implementing headache services around the country, an enactment of stage 3 (intervention) of the Global Campaign against Headache − the continuing medical education (CME) programHeadache Schools −was established. ‘SMART’ (Screen, Migrain...

Inpatient quality metrics in neurology: A grand challenge
The need to ensure quality in medicine has become paramount in the current environment of health care accountability, affordability, and access. There are many tools that are used to ensure quality, including peer review, continuing medical education, maintenance of certification, formal disease-specific guidelines,1 and quality measures.2 The lines between these various tools can sometimes be blurred and lead to confusion for the clinical neurologist.

Letter re: Burnout, career satisfaction, and well-being among US neurologists in 2016
I read with interest the article on burnout among US neurologists.1 There are 2 additional factors contributing to burnout that the authors fail to address. One is the electronization of medicine. Electronization is a term used to describe the process of taking an item or process from paper-based form and electronically producing it, mainly to increase profitability and efficiency. We now have electronic health records (EHR) available on laptop, iPad, and cell phone. Patients can email physicians through the myconnect portal on the EHR, contact physicians through work email, or, in some instances, text physicians on cell p...

A Survey of Neurologists on Postconcussion Syndrome
ConclusionsThere has been growing acceptance of the organicity of PCS among neurologists in the last 25 years. There is significant concern over the long‐term sequelae of concussion as most respondents would not recommend that their son or grandson play football.
