Simulation-Based Training in Brain Death Determination Incorporating Family Discussion: A Pilot Project (P2.376)
Conclusion: This was a small pilot demonstration project, but the positive results suggest there is benefit in simulation training about clinical assessment and family discussion on brain-death. We plan to expand out participant pool to include neurology residents, neurosurgery residents, and pulmonary critical care fellows. We suggest this type of brain death simulation training may be beneficially incorporated as part of Neurology (and other) Residency Milestone Assessments.Disclosure: Dr. Ortiz-Garcia has nothing to disclose. Feasibility of Google Glass for Remote Resident Supervision and Evaluation (P1.039)
Conclusions:This pilot feasibility study is a first step in applying mobile telemedicine using GG for remote supervision and evaluation of neurology residents. Early experiences suggest good technical feasibility and patient acceptance. Primary outcome analysis of inter-rater agreement between in-person and remote (GG) evaluation of the NIHSS and NEX assessments is pending.Study Supported by: This study receives support from an American Academy of Neurology Education Grant, as well as from an American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology Faculty Fellowship Award.Disclosure: Dr. Carrera has nothing to disclose. Impact of Live Patient Didactic Conference on Neurology Resident Outpatient Education (P1.043)
Conclusions:The series effectively educated residents about outpatient disorders underrepresented in training. Patient participation was identified as essential. Future efforts should standardize the faculty/patient interaction to create a model that can be continued and adopted elsewhere.Disclosure: Dr. Doughty has nothing to disclose. Simulation-based training in brain death determination incorporating family discussion: An update on an ongoing project (P1.060)
Conclusions:As more participants are included in the analysis, results continue to suggest a benefit in simulation training focusing on clinical assessment and family discussion regarding the diagnosis of brain death. We plan to continue recruiting more participants while codifying the communication technique curriculum. Based on this study’s positive results, we recommend the addition of this type of brain death simulation training into the Neurology Residency Milestone Assessments.Disclosure: Dr. Douglas has nothing to disclose. Effects of education on aging-related cortical thinning among cognitively normal individuals
Conclusions: Our findings suggest the protective effect of education on cortical thinning in cognitively normal older individuals, regardless of vascular risk factors. This effect was found only in the older participants, suggesting that the protective effects of education on cortical thickness might be achieved by increased resistance to structural loss from aging rather than by simply providing a fixed advantage in the brain.

Associations between education and brain structure at age 73 years, adjusted for age 11 IQ
Conclusions: The association between years of education and brain structure 60 years later was restricted to cortical thickness in this sample; however, the previously reported associations between longer education and a thicker cortex are likely to be overestimates in terms of both magnitude and distribution. This finding has implications for understanding, and possibly ameliorating, life-course brain health.
