Twelve-month recovery of medical decision-making capacity following traumatic brain injury
Conclusions: Over 1 year, most individuals with mTBI or cmTBI regain MDC, while many individuals with msevTBI have lingering deficits in reasoning and comprehension of treatment information. Clinical recovery of MDC occurs primarily during the first 6 months post-TBI regardless of injury severity. Clinicians can therefore identify MDC outcomes in TBI at 6 months postinjury.

Long-Term Safety and Maintenance of Efficacy From an Open-Label Extension of the Double-Blind Pivotal Study of Levodopa-Carbidopa Intestinal Gel (LCIG) in Advanced Parkinson's Disease Patients (P7.081)
CONCLUSIONS: Continuing-LCIG patients continued to derive benefit from LCIG without developing tolerance while the magnitude of benefit among LCIG-naïve patients was similar to that observed in the pivotal study (Olanow, MDS, 2012). AE profile was similar to that observed in other phase 3 studies(Fernandez, Parkinsonism & Related Disorders, 2013).Study Supported by: AbbVieDisclosure: Dr. Fernandez has received personal compensation for activities with Advanced Health Media, Cleveland Clinic, Medical Communications Media, Movement Disorders Society, Vindico Medical Education, Ipsen, Merz Pharmaceuticals, Pfizer Inc...

Survey of the Child Neurology Program Coordinator Association: Workforce Issues and Readiness for the Next Accreditation System
In preparation for the implementation of the Next Accreditation System in Child Neurology, the authors organized the first meeting of child neurology program coordinators in October 2014. A workforce and program-readiness survey was conducted initially. Coordinator job titles varied widely. Most respondents (65%) managed 1 or more fellowships plus child neurology residency. Most had worked in graduate medical education less than 5 years (53%), with no career path (88%), supervised by someone without graduate medical education experience (85%), in divisions where faculty knowledge was judged inadequate (72%). A small propor...

Readability of patient education material in stroke: a systematic literature review
CONCLUSION: Paper and online patient education materials exceed the reading level of stroke patients and the AMA recommended 6th grade level. Due to limitations in readability, stroke patients are not being adequately educated about their condition.PMID:37724783 | DOI:10.1080/10749357.2023.2259177

YouTube as a potential learning tool to help distinguish tonic-clonic seizures from nonepileptic attacks.
This study set out to determine whether the videos on YouTube accurately depict the type of seizures that a medical student may search for. Two consultant epileptologists independently assessed the top YouTube videos returned following searches for eight terms relating to different categories of seizures. The videos were rated for their technical quality, concordance of diagnosis with an epileptologist-assigned diagnosis, and efficacy as a learning tool for medical education. Of the 200 videos assessed, 106 (63%) met the inclusion criteria for further analysis. Technical quality was generally good and only interfered with ...

The current state of headache medicine education in the United States and Canada: An observational, survey-based study of neurology clerkship directors and curriculum deans
CONCLUSIONS: The majority of medical schools report incorporating headache medicine education into preclinical or clinical curricula and cover a range of topics in headache medicine. Yet there remains a lack of consistency, with some reporting limited headache education, citing barriers such as lack of administrative support and available educational resources. There is also variation in what is being taught at the medical student level. Future projects should aim to address said barriers, with the goal of providing a standardized headache medicine curriculum for use across medical schools.PMID:34184273 | DOI:10.1111/head.14134

Confusion about P. Schröder, W. Villinger and H. Heinze : The three chairmen of the German Society for Child Psychiatry and Therapeutic Education between 1940 and 1945.
Abstract On 5 September 1940, the German Society for Child Psychiatry and Therapeutic Education (DGKH) was founded. In order to secure sustainable impact, the young professional association aimed to: (1) Increase its scientific reputation through the organization of regular conventions and publications, (2) Attain continuity in its leadership (board) and membership growth, and (3) Establish itself in national socialistic politics and society for health care policy matters. Due to the unexpected death of the first chairman, Paul Schröder, only nine months after DGKH's foundation, these objectives were seriously pu...

Identification and Treatment of Drug-Resistant Epilepsy
This article discusses the gap between evidence and practice and common misconceptions about epilepsy surgery and reviews the current diagnostic and therapeutic surgical options. RECENT FINDINGS Three randomized controlled trials comparing the medical versus surgical treatment for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy have shown the superiority of surgery in controlling seizures and improving patients’ quality of life. In addition to resective surgery, neuromodulation through devices such as responsive neurostimulation and vagal nerve stimulation have also shown efficacy in seizure control that increases over time. Di...

Manual joint mobilisation techniques, supervised physical activity, psychological treatment, acupuncture and patient education for patients with tension-type headache. A systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionBased on identified benefits, certainty of evidence, and patient preferences, manual joint mobilisation techniques, supervised physical activity, psychological treatment, acupuncture, and patient education can be considered as non-pharmacological treatment approaches for TTH. Some positive effects were shown on headache frequency, quality of life, pain intensity and stress symptoms. Few studies and low sample sizes posed a challenge in drawing solid conclusions. Therefore, high-quality RCTs are warranted.
