Associations of education with overall diet quality are explained by different food groups in middle-aged and old Japanese women.
CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that positive associations between education and diet quality are explained by different food groups in middle-aged and older Japanese women, which are independent of lifestyle and neighborhood variables. PMID: 32418938 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

UK general practice: Continuing to fail in the care of people with epilepsy?
CONCLUSION: This study reveals poor annual review rates for PWE in UK primary care, which have fallen further since the removal of epilepsy from QOF. Unmet needs persist for people with poorly controlled epilepsy not under specialist care, bone health, and the care of women of child bearing age. This study, along with previous work, brings into question the concept of shared care for PWE. Clinical Commissioning Groups should consider investing in the training and employment of GPwSIe (GP with Special Interest in epilepsy) and ENS (Epilepsy Nurse Specialists) to work in the community. The Government should examine re-introd...

Diet therapy along with Nutrition Education can Improve Renal Function in People with Stages 3-4 chronic kidney disease who do not have diabetes. (A randomized controlled trial)
Br J Nutr. 2022 Jul 7:1-36. doi: 10.1017/S0007114522002094. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe current trial investigates the effect of renal diet therapy and nutritional education on the estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR), blood pressure, and depression among patients with CKD. A total of 120 CKD patients (stages 3-4) (15<eGFR<60) were randomized into an intensive nutrition intervention group (individualized renal diet therapy plus nutrition counseling: 0.75 g protein/kg/day and 30-35 kcal/kg/day with sodium restriction) and a control group (routine and standard care) for 24 weeks. The primary outcome was th...

A systematic literature search and review of sodium concentrations of body fluids
.
CONCLUSIONS: This is the first in-depth review of verifiable sodium concentrations of body fluids most commonly lost in hospitalized patients. Sodium concentrations are fluid-specific and consistent. Sodium concentrations for diarrhea are associated with specific mechanisms/causes. These data should be useful to more accurately replace sodium and water content for specific body fluid losses.

Managing diabetic kidney disease
AbstractIntroductionDiabetes mellitus (DM) is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD). This review covers the pillars of care essential for the management of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) including (1) early diagnosis, (2) improved glycaemic control, (3) treatment of hypertension, (4) identification and treatment of associated metabolic bone disease and (5) identification and effective management of dyslipidaemia and additional cardiovascular risk factors.Sources of dataWe searched PubMed for articles using search terms: diabetic nephropathy, diabetic kidney disease, diabetes and chronic kidney disease. We used c...

Excessive Daytime Sleepiness in Parkinson's Disease: Clinical Implications and Management.
Conclusions: EDS is common in the PD population and can have an immensely negative impact on quality of life. Its causes are multifactorial, which complicates its treatment. Further investigations are required to determine the safety and efficacy of potential therapies and to develop novel treatment approaches for EDS in PD. PMID: 29664059 [PubMed - in process]

Search of non-ionic surfactants suitable for micellar liquid chromatography.
Abstract Most reports in reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) with micellar mobile phases make use of the anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate. This surfactant masks efficiently the silanol groups that are the origin of the poor efficiencies and tailing peaks observed for basic compounds in conventional RPLC. However, it has the handicap of yielding excessive retention, which forces the addition of an organic solvent to reduce the retention times to practical values. Other surfactants, such as the non-ionic polyoxyethylene(23)lauryl ether (Brij-35), are rarely used. Brij-35 allows the separation of a large range ...

Bactericidal efficacy of three parameters of Nd:YAP laser irradiation against Enterococcus faecalis compared with NaOCl irrigation
AbstractThe success of endodontic treatment depends on the thorough removal of microorganisms from the root canal system. The search for new ways to eliminate the microorganisms is therefore justified. Nd:YAP is a laser that uses yttrium aluminum perovskite, doped with neodymium crystal, as active laser medium. We used the Nd:YAP laser in an in vitro experiment to evaluate the bactericidal effect of three parameters of Nd:YAP laser-activated irrigation on biofilms ofEnterococcus faecalis in root canals. The canals of 45 extracted human single-root teeth were prepared on a #35 Mtwo instrument and contaminated withE. faecali...

Molecular basis of trigeminal nerve disorders and healing.
CONCLUSIONS: More investigations regarding the gain-of-function mutation of NaV1.6 sodium channels are essential for the diagnosis and treatment of trigeminal nerve disorders, regardless of whether these are associated with vascular compression or not. PMID: 30229854 [PubMed - in process]
