HIPEC morbidity and implications for post-surgical treatment. A medical oncologist advice
Bull Cancer. 2023 Feb 21:S0007-4551(23)00052-8. doi: 10.1016/j.bulcan.2023.01.011. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe fear that the medical oncologist may have is that HIPEC integrated into a multidisciplinary care pathway will negatively impact the treatments that will follow. This fear is largely related to the side effects, which are themselves dependent on the medication used. Cisplatin, most frequently used for epithelial ovarian cancers, has essentially renal toxicity, which can be avoided by the use of sodium thiosulfate. Oxaliplatin induces more severe toxicities post surgery than mitomycin C in colorectal cancers. ...

Sivelestat sodium for treatment of patients with COVID-19-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome in intensive care unit: a single-center retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: Sivelestat sodium treatment is not correlated with the reduction of mortality or length of hospital stay, but is associated with reduced serum IL-6 level in patients with COVID-19-associated ARDS.PMID:37712261 | PMC:PMC10505566 | DOI:10.12122/j.issn.1673-4254.2023.08.01

Augmented reality experimentation on oxygen gas generation from hydrogen peroxide and bleach reaction
Abstract The appreciation and understanding of gas generation through processes is vital in biochemical education. In this work, an augmented reality tool is reported to depict the redox reaction between hydrogen peroxide and sodium hypochlorite solutions, two ubiquitous oxidizing agents, to create oxygen, a combustible gas. As it operates out of smartphones or tablets, students are able to conduct the exercise collaboratively, respond in a manner similar to an actual physical experiment, and able to depict the oxygen volume changes in relation to the volume of hydrogen peroxide of different concentrations used. The tool o...

Position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior, and School Nutrition Association: Comprehensive Nutrition Programs and Services in Schools
It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, School Nutrition Association, and Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior that comprehensive, integrated nutrition programs in preschool through high school are essential to improve the health, nutritional status, and academic performance of our nation ’s children. Through the continued use of multidisciplinary teams, local school needs will be better identified and addressed within updated wellness policies. Updated nutrition standards are providing students with a wider variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, while limiting sodium, ca lories, and saturated fat.

An Interpretable and Expandable Deep Learning Diagnostic System for Multiple Ocular Diseases: Qualitative Study
Conclusions: The interpretable and expandable medical artificial intelligence platform was successfully built; this system can identify the disease, distinguish different anatomical parts and foci, discern the diagnostic information relevant to the diagnosis of diseases, and provide treatment suggestions. During this process, the whole diagnostic flow becomes clear and understandable to both doctors and their patients. Moreover, other diseases can be seamlessly integrated into this system without any influence on existing modules or diseases. Furthermore, this framework can assist in the clinical training of junior doctors...

Real-World Management of Hyperkalemia in the Emergency Department: An Electronic Medical Record Analysis
CONCLUSION: Patients with moderate and severe hyperkalemia experienced elevated risk of hyperkalemia recurrence and hyperkalemia-related inpatient readmission following discharge from the ED from a descriptive analysis. Future research to assess strategies to reduce hyperkalemia recurrence and inpatient admission in this patient population would be beneficial.PMID:34958445 | DOI:10.1007/s12325-021-02017-w

An Online, Multi-Institutional APPE Student Debate on Diabetes Medications
Conclusion Preliminary results suggest the incorporation of an online, multi-institutional debate as an alternative to journal clubs during APPE rotations was well received. Further research is warranted on the impact of the multi-institutional debate and how to best deliver it during the APPEs of a pharmacy curriculum.PMID:35042682 | DOI:10.5688/ajpe8815

Evidence-Based Medical Therapy in Patients With Heart Failure With Reduced Ejection Fraction and Chronic Kidney Disease
Circulation. 2022 Mar;145(9):693-712. doi: 10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.121.052792. Epub 2022 Feb 28.ABSTRACTChronic kidney disease (CKD) as identified by a reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is a common comorbidity in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). The presence of CKD is associated with more severe heart failure, and CKD itself is a strong independent risk factor of poor cardiovascular outcome. Furthermore, the presence of CKD often influences the decision to start, uptitrate, or discontinue possible life-saving HFrEF therapies. Because pivotal HFrEF randomized clinical tria...
