Implication of apoptosis and oxidative stress in mitigation of ivermectin long-term hazards by zinc nanoparticles in male rabbits
In conclusion, ZnNPs exhibited promising ability for improving the growth and fertility status of rabbits and reducing the deleterious effects of IVM possibly through the suppression of apoptotic and oxidative pathways.PMID:36372859 | DOI:10.1007/s11356-022-24095-1 (Source: Environmental Science and Pollution Research International)

Identification of the onchocerciasis vector in the Kakoi-Koda focus of the Democratic Republic of Congo
Conclusions/SignificanceSimulium dentulosum currently appears to be the main vector of human onchocerciasis within the Kakoi-Koda focus, andS.vorax may be a secondary vector. It remains possible thatS.neavei was the main (or only) vector in the past having now become rare as a result of the removal of tree-cover and land-use changes.Simulium vorax has previously been shown to support the development ofO.volvulus in the laboratory, but this is the first time thatS.dentulosum has been implicated as a probable vector of onchocerciasis, and this raises the possibility that other blackfly species which are not generally conside...

Eosinophils in filarial infections: Inducers of protection or pathology?
Filariae are parasitic roundworms, which can cause debilitating diseases such as lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis. Lymphatic filariasis, also known as elephantiasis, and onchocerciasis, commonly referred to as river blindness, can lead to stigmatizing pathologies and present a socio-economic burden for affected people and their endemic countries. Filariae typically induce a type 2 immune response, which is characterized by cytokines, i.e., IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13 as well as type 2 immune cells including alternatively activated macrophages, innate lymphoid cells and Th2 cells. However, the hallmark characteristic of fil...

Ivermectin treatment response in two rural villages with a high prevalence of onchocerciasis and epilepsy, Mahenge Tanzania
Conclusion: Our study reports a decrease in microfilarial density following ivermectin treatment in most individuals. Optimizing ivermectin coverage will address the ongoing onchocerciasis transmission in Mahenge. Keywords: Onchocerciasis, ivermectin; treatment response, epilepsy; Tanzania. Prevalence of epilepsy in Ndom Health District (Littoral Region, Cameroon) after long-term ivermectin-based preventive chemotherapy for the control of onchocerciasis
This study aimed at assessing the prevalence of epilepsy in an onchocerciasis endemic area under annual CDTI for 16 years. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in two communities (Kelleng and Nkonkwalla) located in the Ndom Health District (Littoral Region, Cameroon) to assess the prevalence of epilepsy using a standardized questionnaire for non-specialists in tropical areas. Data on the nuisance of onchocerciasis vector and distance of surveyed households to the river were also collected. Epilepsy status was collected from 367 participants (sex ratio (M/F): 1.13). The crude prevalence of epilepsy was estimated at 8.4 % ...
