Iguratimod prevents renal fibrosis in unilateral ureteral obstruction model mice by suppressing M2 macrophage infiltration and macrophage-myofibroblast transition
This study aimed to investigate whether iguratimod could affect renal fibrosis progression. Three different concentrations of iguratimod (30 mg/kg/day, 10 mg/kg/day, and 3 mg/kg/day) were used to intervene in unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) model mice. Iguratimod at 10 mg/kg/day was observed to be effective in slowing UUO-mediated renal fibrosis. In addition, stimulating bone marrow-derived macrophages with IL-4 and/or iguratimod, or with TGF-β and iguratimod or SRC inhibitors in vitro, suggested that iguratimod mitigates the progression of renal fibrosis in UUO mice, at least in part, by inhibiting the IL-4/STAT6 s...

Assessing the role of Chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 14 in AKI: a European consensus meeting
CONCLUSION: Real world urinary CCL14 use appears to provide improved care options to patients at risk for persistent severe AKI. Experts believe there is a role for CCL14 in AKI management and it may potentially reduce AKI-disease burden. There is, however, an urgent need for evidence on treatment decisions and adjustments based on CCL14 results.PMID:38666354 | DOI:10.1080/0886022X.2024.2345747 (Source: Renal Failure)

Unraveling the Molecular Landscape of kAE1: A Narrative Review
Can J Physiol Pharmacol. 2024 Apr 26. doi: 10.1139/cjpp-2023-0482. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTKidney anion exchanger 1 (kAE1) is an isoform of the AE1 protein encoded by the SLC4A1 gene. It is a basolateral membrane protein expressed by α-intercalated cells in the connecting tubules and collecting duct of the kidney. Its main function is to exchange bicarbonate and chloride ions between the blood and urine to maintain blood pH at physiological threshold. The kAE1 protein undergoes multiple post-translational modifications such as phosphorylation and ubiquitination and interacts with many different proteins such as clau...

A case report of biclonal immunoglobulin D lambda/lambda multiple myeloma in patient with liver echinococcosis
Biochem Med (Zagreb). 2024 Jun 15;34(2):020801. doi: 10.11613/BM.2024.020801. Epub 2024 Apr 15.ABSTRACTLess than 2% of all symptomatic multiple myeloma (MM) has immunoglobulin D (IgD) as monoclonal protein. Biclonal gammopathy is much rarer. At the time of diagnosis, disease is often in advanced stage, including renal failure, anemia, hypercalcemia and lytic bone lesions. Due to the rarity of myeloma itself, but also due to the fact that anti-IgD antisera is not used in routine practice, there are only a few reports of IgD MM described in the literature. This case report describes a patient with IgD lambda MM with anemia a...

Factors associated with post-hospitalization dialysis dependence in ECMO patients who required continuous renal replacement therapy
CONCLUSIONS: AKI requiring CRRT was associated with high mortality in patients receiving ECMO. Nonetheless, most ECMO survivors became dialysis-free before hospital discharge. Variables associated with the need for outpatient dialysis included hyperlipidemia and prolonged need for CRRT during hospitalization.PMID:38655876 | DOI:10.1080/0886022X.2024.2343810 (Source: Renal Failure)

Shenkang injection for the treatment of acute kidney injury: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: The use of SKI in AKI patients may reduce SCr, BUN, CysC, 24-h Upro levels, and APACHE II scores in AKI patients. The incidence of adverse reactions did not differ from that in the control group. Additional rigorous clinical trials will be necessary in the future to thoroughly evaluate and establish the effectiveness of SKI in the treatment of AKI.PMID:38655870 | DOI:10.1080/0886022X.2024.2338566 (Source: Renal Failure)

The prevalence of functional dyspepsia using Rome IV questionnaire among chronic kidney disease patients
Conclusion: The prevalence of FD amongst CKD patients is 14.7% with EPS the predominant subtype. Male patients, HCV patients, patients with higher CKD stages and highly impaired eGFR (low eGFR) are more probable to have FD.PMID:38655865 | DOI:10.1080/0886022X.2024.2344651 (Source: Renal Failure)

To Drain or Not: Drainage Procedures Remain a Central Tenet of Management of Infected Collections in Acute Pancreatitis
Am Surg. 2024 Apr 24:31348241241721. doi: 10.1177/00031348241241721. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRecent literature advocates for delayed or avoidance of catheter drainage of infected peri-pancreatic collections (IPCs) in acute pancreatitis (AP). This may not be realistic for patients at academic centers, many of whom are critically ill. We retrospectively reviewed 72 patients admitted to our institution from 2016-2021 with AP and IPCs. 34.7% had a Bedside Index of Severity in Acute Pancreatitis (BISAP) score ≥3, and 56.9% had a Balthazar score of E. 65.3% were admitted to the ICU, 51.4% experienced respiratory failure,...

Trimerization profile of type IV collagen COL4A5 exon deletion in X-linked Alport syndrome
ConclusionExon skipping is advantageous for nonsense mutants in AS with severe phenotypes and early onset of renal failure but applications may be limited to ΔExons capable of normal trimerization and secretion. This study provides information on α5(IV) exon-skipping for possible therapeutic application and the prediction of the trimer behavior associated with exon-skipping in Alport syndrome. Association of KLOTHO gene variants with metabolic and renal function parameters in Mexican patients living with type 2 diabetes
ConclusionIn Mexican patients living with type 2 diabetes,KL variant rs9536314 was found associated with low odds of hypo-HDL cholesterol, albuminuria and presence of CKD. Meanwhile the consensus of soluble KLOTHO measurement is reached, genetic variants in theKL gene could be considered as genetic markers for CKD susceptibility in patients at high-risk of vascular complications.
