Predictors of permanent pacemaker implantation following transcatheter aortic valve replacement-the search is still on!
World J Cardiol. 2024 Mar 26;16(3):104-108. doi: 10.4330/wjc.v16.i3.104.ABSTRACTSeveral anatomical, demographic, clinical, electrocardiographic, procedural, and valve-related variables can be used to predict the probability of developing conduction abnormalities after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) that necessitate permanent pacemaker (PPM) implantation. These variables include calcifications around the device landing zone and in the mitral annulus; pre-existing electrocardiographic abnormalities such as left and right bundle branch blocks (BBB), first- and second-degree atrioventricular blocks, as well as b...

Myofibroblast-derived exosomes enhance macrophages to myofibroblasts transition and kidney fibrosis
Ren Fail. 2024 Dec;46(1):2334406. doi: 10.1080/0886022X.2024.2334406. Epub 2024 Apr 4.ABSTRACTA critical event in the pathogenesis of kidney fibrosis is the transition of macrophages into myofibroblasts (MMT). Exosomes play an important role in crosstalk among cells in the kidney and the development of renal fibrosis. However, the role of myofibroblast-derived exosomes in the process of MMT and renal fibrosis progression remains unknown. Here, we examined the role of myofibroblast-derived exosomes in MMT and kidney fibrogenesis. In vitro, transforming growth factor-β1 stimulated the differentiation of kidney fibroblasts i...

Adenine-induced animal model of chronic kidney disease: current applications and future perspectives
This article reviews a widely used animal model of CKD, which is induced by adenine. While a physiologic dose of adenine is beneficial in terms of biological activity, a high dose of adenine is known to induce renal disease in the organism. Following a brief description of the procedure for disease induction by adenine, major mechanisms of adenine-induced CKD are then reviewed, including inflammation, oxidative stress, programmed cell death, metabolic disorders, and fibrillation. Finally, the application and future perspective of this adenine-induced CKD model as a platform for testing the efficacy of a variety of therapeu...

GLIM criteria for definition of malnutrition in peritoneal dialysis: a new aspect of nutritional assessment
Conclusions: The GLIM criteria provide a viable tool for nutritional assessment in patients with PD, and malnutrition defined according to the GLIM can predict prognosis with an acceptable performance.PMID:38575339 | DOI:10.1080/0886022X.2024.2337290 (Source: Renal Failure)

Outcome of surgical parathyroidectomy for tertiary hyperparathyroidism in kidney transplant recipients: tertiary hyperparathyroidism should not be ignored, for the sake of precious allografts
Ren Fail. 2024 Dec;46(1):2333919. doi: 10.1080/0886022X.2024.2333919. Epub 2024 Apr 4.ABSTRACTTertiary hyperparathyroidism is a complication of kidney transplantation. This complicated condition carries over from the dialysis period and varies according to the function of the transplanted allograft. Treatments include pharmacotherapy (mainly using calcimimetics) and parathyroidectomy, but calcimimetics are currently not covered by the national insurance system in Japan. Two types of parathyroidectomy can be performed: subtotal parathyroidectomy; and total parathyroidectomy with partial autograft. Both types can be expected...
