Adenine-induced animal model of chronic kidney disease: current applications and future perspectives
This article reviews a widely used animal model of CKD, which is induced by adenine. While a physiologic dose of adenine is beneficial in terms of biological activity, a high dose of adenine is known to induce renal disease in the organism. Following a brief description of the procedure for disease induction by adenine, major mechanisms of adenine-induced CKD are then reviewed, including inflammation, oxidative stress, programmed cell death, metabolic disorders, and fibrillation. Finally, the application and future perspective of this adenine-induced CKD model as a platform for testing the efficacy of a variety of therapeu...

Outcome of surgical parathyroidectomy for tertiary hyperparathyroidism in kidney transplant recipients: tertiary hyperparathyroidism should not be ignored, for the sake of precious allografts
Ren Fail. 2024 Dec;46(1):2333919. doi: 10.1080/0886022X.2024.2333919. Epub 2024 Apr 4.ABSTRACTTertiary hyperparathyroidism is a complication of kidney transplantation. This complicated condition carries over from the dialysis period and varies according to the function of the transplanted allograft. Treatments include pharmacotherapy (mainly using calcimimetics) and parathyroidectomy, but calcimimetics are currently not covered by the national insurance system in Japan. Two types of parathyroidectomy can be performed: subtotal parathyroidectomy; and total parathyroidectomy with partial autograft. Both types can be expected...

Myofibroblast-derived exosomes enhance macrophages to myofibroblasts transition and kidney fibrosis
Ren Fail. 2024 Dec;46(1):2334406. doi: 10.1080/0886022X.2024.2334406. Epub 2024 Apr 4.ABSTRACTA critical event in the pathogenesis of kidney fibrosis is the transition of macrophages into myofibroblasts (MMT). Exosomes play an important role in crosstalk among cells in the kidney and the development of renal fibrosis. However, the role of myofibroblast-derived exosomes in the process of MMT and renal fibrosis progression remains unknown. Here, we examined the role of myofibroblast-derived exosomes in MMT and kidney fibrogenesis. In vitro, transforming growth factor-β1 stimulated the differentiation of kidney fibroblasts i...

Predictive effect of estimated glomerular filtrate rate by creatinine or cystatin C on mortality in patients with coronary artery disease
CONCLUSIONS: Estimated GFR based on both creatinine and cystatin C has highest predictive effect for cardiovascular and all-cause mortality among CAD patients. Meanwhile, supranormal eGFRcr may indicate a higher risk of mortality.PMID:38566467 | DOI:10.1080/0886022X.2024.2327494 (Source: Renal Failure)

Dapagliflozin-induced drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) Followed By Acute Interstitial Nephritis (AIN): A Case Report
Intern Med. 2024 Apr 2. doi: 10.2169/internalmedicine.3347-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 78-year-old male was admitted to the hospital with acute renal failure and generalized erythema after starting dapagliflozin 10 mg/day for chronic kidney disease (CKD). A skin biopsy revealed superficial perivascular dermatitis with eosinophils. A renal biopsy revealed lymphocytic and eosinophilic infiltration of the interstitium, and focal tubulitis. The patient was diagnosed with a dapagliflozin-induced drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), followed by acute interstitial nephritis (AIN), and prednisolon...

Determinants and impact of calcium oxalate crystal deposition on renal outcomes in acute kidney injury patients
CONCLUSIONS: In AKI, CaOx deposition is common despite declining GFR. Factors worsening tubular injury, not just oxalate-to-citrate ratios, are key to understanding impaired renal recovery.PMID:38570195 | PMC:PMC10993744 | DOI:10.1080/0886022X.2024.2334396 (Source: Renal Failure)
