Radiologic Abnormalities in Prolonged SARS-CoV-2 Infection: A Systematic Review
Korean J Radiol. 2024 May;25(5):473-480. doi: 10.3348/kjr.2023.1149.ABSTRACTWe systematically reviewed radiological abnormalities in patients with prolonged SARS-CoV-2 infection, defined as persistently positive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results for SARS-CoV-2 for > 21 days, with either persistent or relapsed symptoms. We extracted data from 24 patients (median age, 54.5 [interquartile range, 44-64 years]) reported in the literature and analyzed their representative CT images based on the timing of the CT scan relative to the initial PCR positivity. Our analysis focused on the patterns and distribution of CT findi...

Light-Chain Cardiac Amyloidosis: Cardiac Magnetic Resonance for Assessing Response to Chemotherapy
CONCLUSION: Cardiac amyloid deposition can regress following chemotherapy in patients with AL-CA, particularly showing more prominent regression, possibly earlier, in the RV. CMR emerges as an effective tool for monitoring associated tissue characteristics and ventricular functional recovery in patients with AL-CA undergoing chemotherapy, thereby supporting its utility in treatment response assessment.PMID:38685733 | DOI:10.3348/kjr.2023.0985 (Source: Korean Journal of Radiology)

Intraoperative radiofrequency ablation for unresectable abdominal paraganglioma: a case report
We presented the case of a 31-year-old man who had a 9-cm functioning unresectable PPGL. He was treated with 13 cycles of cytotoxic chemotherapy without objective tumor response, according to the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST). Subsequently, magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 9.0 × 8.6 × 6.0-cm retroperitoneal mass that extended to the inferior portion of the inferior vena cava, the inferior mesenteric artery, and the infrarenal aorta. Biochemical evaluation demonstrated high level of plasma normetanephrine (20.2 nmol/L, normal range <0.9 nmol/L). Genetic investigation showed the germline pat...

Radiation dose estimation with multiple artificial neural networks in dicentric chromosome assay
CONCLUSIONS: This study successfully demonstrates a high-precision dose estimation method across a general range up to 4 Gy through fully automated detection of DCs, adhering strictly to Poisson distribution. Incorporating multiple ANNs confirms the ability to perform fully automated radiation dose estimation. This approach is particularly advantageous in scenarios such as large-scale radiological incidents, improving operational efficiency and speeding up procedures while maintaining consistency in assessments. Moreover, it reduces potential human error and enhances the reliability of results.PMID:38687685 | DOI:10.1080/0...

Hypofractionated Radiation Therapy Suppresses Radioresistance in U87 Human Glioma Cells by Inhibiting Yap1 and Hsp90 Proteins
CONCLUSION: For this purpose, expression levels of radioresistance markers Yap-1 and Hsp90 were evaluated after treatment with HF-GKRT, and this was compared with single fraction Gamma Knife radiation therapy (SF-GKRT) in U87MG primary human glioblastoma cell line model. This would help design a novel radiation therapy regimen for glioblastoma patients by reducing the risk of radioresistance.PMID:38685786 | DOI:10.2174/0118744710300495240409074900 (Source: Current Radiopharmaceuticals)

Letter to the Editor Regarding Article “Prior to Initiation of Chemotherapy, Can We Predict Breast Tumor Response? Deep Learning Convolutional Neural Networks Approach Using a Breast MRI Tumor Dataset”
AbstractThe cited article reports on a convolutional neural network trained to predict response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy from pre-treatment breast MRI scans. The proposed algorithm attains impressive performance on the test dataset with a mean Area Under the Receiver-Operating Characteristic curve of 0.98 and a mean accuracy of 88%. In this letter, I raise concerns that the reported results can be explained by inadvertent data leakage between training and test datasets. More precisely, I conjecture that the random split of the full dataset in training and test sets did not occur on a patient level, but rather on the lev...

Prognostic value of exercise longitudinal right ventricular free wall strain in patients with sickle cell disease
AbstractLongitudinal right ventricular free wall strain (RVFWS) has been identified as an independent prognostic marker in patients with pulmonary hypertension. Little is known however about the prognostic value of RVFWS in patients with sickle cell (SC) disease, particularly during exercise. We therefore examined the prognostic significance of RVFWS both at rest and with exercise in patients with SC disease and normal resting systolic pulmonary artery pressure (SPAP). Consecutive patients with SC disease referred for bicycle ergometer stress echocardiography (SE) were enrolled ftom July 2019 to January 2021. All patients ...
