A deep learning model for translating CT to ventilation imaging: analysis of accuracy and impact on functional avoidance radiotherapy planning
ConclusionUsing deep-learning techniques, CTVISyn generated from planning CT exhibited a moderate-to-high correlation with CTVI4DCT. The CTVISyn-guided plans were comparable to the CTVI4DCT-guided plans, effectively reducing pulmonary toxicity in patients while maintaining acceptable plan quality. Further prospective trials are needed to validate these findings. (Source: Japanese Journal of Radiology)

Radiomics-based machine learning in the differentiation of benign and malignant bowel wall thickening radiomics in bowel wall thickening
ConclusionIn conclusion, radiomic-based machine learning has shown high success in distinguishing malignant and benign BWT and may improve diagnostic accuracy compared to clinical features only. The results of our study may help ensure early diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancers by facilitating the recognition of malignant BWT. (Source: Japanese Journal of Radiology)

Non-contrast MRI of micro-vascularity of the feet and toes
ConclusionMR perfusion imaging of the distal foot shows greater SIR and perfusion metrics with the 4-tag pulse compared to the 1-tag pulse technique. This will likely benefit those with low perfusion due to aging, PAD, diabetic foot, and other vascular diseases. (Source: Japanese Journal of Radiology)

Association of lower extremity peripheral arterial disease with quantitative muscle features from computed tomography angiography
ConclusionsLower extremity muscle features are associated with PAD severity and can be used for PAD prediction.Critical relevance statementQuantitative image features of lower extremity muscles are associated with the degree of lower leg arterial stenosis/occlusion and can be a beneficial supplement to the current imaging methods of vascular stenosis evaluation for the prediction of peripheral arterial disease severity.Key points• Compared with severe PAD, lower leg muscles of mild PAD showed higher CT values (39.5 vs. 44.6, p  <  0.001).• Models developed with muscle CT features had AUC = 0.89 for predicti...

Testosterone recovery after androgen deprivation therapy in localised prostate cancer: Long-term data from two randomised trials
Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is an effective, commonly used treatment in localised prostate cancer [1]. In the National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines Version 1.2024 [2], the recommendation of ADT plus radiotherapy (RT) for unfavorable intermediate risk prostate cancer (IRPC) is listed as category 2a evidence and as category 1 evidence for high-risk prostate cancer (HRPC). However, ADT is also associated with a long list of hypogonadal side effects that significantly affect patients ’ quality of life [3], including hot flashes [4], fatigue [5], anemia [6], decrease muscle strength, increase body fat [7,8]d...

A systematic review of machine learning based thyroid tumor characterisation using ultrasonographic images
AbstractUltrasonography is widely used to screen thyroid tumors because it is safe, easy to use, and low-cost. However, it is simultaneously affected by speckle noise and other artifacts, so early detection of thyroid abnormalities becomes difficult for the radiologist. Therefore, various researchers continuously address the limitations of sonography and improve the diagnosis potential of US images for thyroid tissue from the last three decays. Accordingly, the present study extensively reviewed various CAD systems used to classify thyroid tumor US (TTUS) images related to datasets, despeckling algorithms, segmentation alg...

AI-assisted automatic MRI-based tongue volume evaluation in motor neuron disease (MND)
ConclusionUtilizing single U-Net trained on three orthogonal orientations with consequent merging of respective orientations in an optimized consensus model reduces the number of erroneous detections and improves the segmentation of the tongue. The CNN-based automatic segmentation allows for accurate quantification of the tongue volumes in all subjects. The application to the ALS variant PBP showed significant reduction of the tongue volume in these patients and opens the way for unbiased future longitudinal studies in diseases affecting tongue volume.
