Anti-spike antibody level is associated with the risk of clinical progression among subjects hospitalized with COVID-19 pneumonia: results from a retrospective cohort study
ConclusionThis study suggests that levels of anti-S antibodies can predict critical or fatal outcomes in COVID-19 pneumonia patients, regardless of vaccination. Whether anti-S Ab could guide risk assessment and vaccination boosting merits further evaluation. (Source: Infection)

A rational designed multi-epitope vaccine elicited robust protective efficacy against Klebsiella pneumoniae lung infection
CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that mHla-EpiVac is a promising vaccine candidate against K. pneumoniae, and further validate the potential of mHla as a versatile carrier protein and adjuvant for antigen design.PMID:38643540 | DOI:10.1016/j.biopha.2024.116611 (Source: Biomedicine and pharmacotherapy = Biomedecine and pharmacotherapie)

Safety of concomitant administration of 23-valent polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine and influenza vaccine among the elderly
CONCLUSIONS: Concomitant administration of PPSV-23 and influenza vaccine in the elderly was not associated with a higher risk of most prespecified adverse events (AEs) compared to sequential vaccination. This study supports the safety of concomitant administration of PPSV-23 and influenza vaccine.PMID:38641496 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.03.078 (Source: Vaccine)

Effect of the PCV 10 vaccination on community-acquired pneumonia hospitalisations after four years of its introduction into the Polish National Immunisation Programme: Follow-up study
CONCLUSIONS: Implementation of the PCV vaccination programme has effectively decreased the incidence of CAP hospitalisations, including children <2 years of age. The group that is most at risk of death are persons aged 60+. The results of our study can be useful in evaluating the vaccine efficacy and benefits, and they can be an essential part of public health policy. Effective prevention strategies for CAP should be implemented in different age groups.PMID:38641493 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.04.019 (Source: Vaccine)

Immunogenicity and safety of a 14-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide conjugate vaccine (PNEUBEVAX 14 ™) administered to 6-8 weeks old healthy Indian Infants: A single blind, randomized, active-controlled, Phase-III study
In this study, immunogenicity and safety of the BE's 14-valent PCV (PNEUBEVAX 14™; BE-PCV-14) containing two additional epidemiologically important serotypes (22F and 33F) was evaluated in infants in comparison to licensed vaccine, Prevenar-13 (PCV-13).METHODS: This is a pivotal phase-3 single blind randomized active-controlled study conducted at 12 sites across India in 6-8 weeks old healthy infants at 6-10-14 weeks dosing schedule to assess immunogenic non-inferiority and safety of a candidate BE-PCV-14. In total, 1290 infants were equally randomized to receive either BE-PCV-14 or PCV-13. Solicited local reactions and ...

Potential impact of annual vaccination with reformulated COVID-19 vaccines: Lessons from the US COVID-19 scenario modeling hub
ConclusionsCOVID-19 is projected to be a significant public health threat over the coming 2 years. Broad vaccination has the potential to substantially reduce the burden of this disease, saving tens of thousands of lives each year. (Source: PLoS Medicine)

Plans to expand African vaccine production face steep hurdles
In March 2022, when the pandemic was still raging, the messenger RNA (mRNA) company Moderna announced it would build a $500 million plant in Kenya to manufacture half a billion doses of its COVID-19 vaccine annually. “ This is major ,” Kenyan President William Ruto said at the time. The plant would help reduce Africa’s dependence on vaccines produced elsewhere, Ruto said—a situation that had turned disastrous during the pandemic—and bring economic benefits as well. But Moderna may never break ground on the Kenya factory. On 11 April, the company said it had “paused its efforts” becau...

Clinical and Imaging Characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 Breakthrough Infection in Hospitalized Immunocompromised Patients
CONCLUSION: Immunocompromised patients with COVID-19 breakthrough infection showed an increased risk of severe clinical outcome, severe pneumonia based on chest radiographs, and typical CT pneumonia. In particular, patients status post solid organ transplantation was specifically found to be associated with a higher risk of all three outcomes than hospitalized immunocompetent patients.PMID:38627873 | DOI:10.3348/kjr.2023.0992 (Source: Korean J Radiol)
