A Different Perspective on the COVID-19 Pandemic: Origin of the Outbreak (Part 1)
Exp Clin Transplant. 2024 Jan;22(Suppl 2):1-14. doi: 10.6002/ect.2023.0074.ABSTRACTIn December 2019, an outbreak caused by novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) started in Wuhan, China. After extensive speculation about a causative agent, a novel betacoronavirus, in the same family as SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV, was identified via next-generation sequencing from samples received from several pneumonia patients. Ribonucleic acid extracted from the patient's bronchoalveolar lavage fluid was used as a template to clone and sequence the genome of SARS-CoV-2. Shortly after, the World Health Organization announced a worldwide pandemic. H...

Epidemiology and Clinical Outcomes of Bacterial Meningitis in Children and Adults in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
AbstractPurpose of ReviewDespite the availability of effective vaccines against the three primary pathogens (Streptococcus pneumoniae,Haemophilus influenzae type b, andNeisseria meningitidis) that cause bacterial meningitis, this condition remains a significant cause of morbidity, neurologic sequelae, and mortality among children and adults living in low-income and middle-income countries.Recent FindingsBacterial meningitis represents a significant public health challenge for national and global health systems. Since vaccine-preventable meningitis remains highly prevalent in low-income and middle-income countries, the Worl...

Clinical characteristics and risk factors of non-mild outcomes in patients with Omicron variant COVID-19 in Shanghai, China
CONCLUSIONS: Our results call for special concern for full and booster vaccination of the elderly, which will effectively protect from progression of COVID-19 to non-mild state. In the meantime, symptomatic COVID-19 patients should be treated as soon as possible.PMID:38377093 | DOI:10.3855/jidc.18138 (Source: Cancer Control)
