Recommend dual-applying?
Hi all, I am an M4 applying ophtho trying to decide whether it's worth the effort to dual apply. My advisors have told me it's not necessary but the horror stories you hear of people not matching with 15 interviews scares me. I could dual apply to radiology without too much difficulty but I am concerned if having to interview for both specialties will lead to burnout and cause me to perform worse on interviews for both. My stats: MD school ranked 20-30 in South 1st quartile for grades but... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Aravind model - Possible in the USA?
Hello, I saw some interesting articles on the Aravind Eye hospital in India and their "McDonaldization" of cataract surgery. The costs of ocular surgery have been brought to light a few months back with the Mr. Beast video. What's holding people back from adopting a similar model here in the US? Is it the liability? I am curious as to hear what your thoughts are. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Middle-tier Programs
Since we're getting into application season, and we tend to get some "will I match" threads that almost invariably say to apply broadly and with mid-tier programs, I thought it might be nice to discuss these spots since the last thread is almost 8 years old. For the sake of simplicity, I took the middle third of Doximity's rankings from last year. A few surprises for me, I'll add my thoughts in the near future. Also, here's last year's applicants' spreadsheet discussing programs, pretty... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What is ophthalmology residency lifestyle like?
I'm a rising M2 who's trying to decide on a specialty ASAP (had a 0 production M1 so I need to get research now) and something I take pretty seriously is a manageable work life balance during residency. I understand that it is surgical and thus am not expecting something super chill like psych, but I cannot do something on the order of neurosurgery, ortho, CT surg, or general surgery based on the residents I have talked to in those fields. Uro and ENT residency also sounds pretty brutal. I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

TASS cases recently?
I know this probably isn't the most helpful place to post but figured I would ask in case someone else has been experiencing similar findings. Several surgeons at our ASC have had a case of TASS over the last 6 weeks or so. The ASC has been undertaking appropriate protocol for investigation but wanted to see if anyone by chance has been experiencing similar. Everything aside from instruments is essentially single use Alcon packs. A few of the cases have been with the Rayner EMV lens. It... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Retraining in a different residency after years of psychiatric practice?
Have you seen any psychiatrists go back and become family docs or IM or other specialty after years of being psychiatrists. In my psych residency we had various people, some mid-later career, like IM or ophtho switching into psych. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

More cuts from CMS, and to no surprise DR and IR top the list yet again
CMS Proposes Nearly 3.4% Cut in Medicare Physician Fees for 2024 Cut 'raises significant concerns for medical groups,' one organization says www.medpagetoday.com Applying into radiology this year. Just unfortunate to see this... Physicians are the only group that does not receive an annual inflation adjustment from medicare. Facility fees do get this adjustment, which is how surgeons are still sustaining high income despite demolition of the professional fee. I was speaking to an ophthalmologist who said they would make far less if they ...

Office Based Surgery
With it getting harder to buy into ASCs and PE taking over the area will younger Ophthalmologists turn to OBS due to the smaller footprint and costs? With more procedures being done with Valium vs IV sedation it seems like a possible option. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Nbeo part 1 help!!!
Hi! I’m retaking my part 1 in august and this is one of the few attempts I have left, so I’m very desperate for any and all test taking advice, strategies, and tips you may have , especially if you took and passed the exam in the last 2-3 years. I personally struggle with anatomy/physiology and optics, and somewhat of the immune/path/micro discipline on the score report . I have kmk signature and optoprep. thank you in advance.
