Non-Long Term Jobs?
Long story short, I need a job for less than a year. Kind of hard to build up a practice during that time and not sure who would even hire me. I know locum jobs wouldn't pay well but would be better than nothing. I would ideally want to do more surgery than clinic if that scenario even exists. Also, I'm in the US. If anyone has any experience or advice, would appreciate it! Thank you! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Optometry-H1B
Hello! I am currently a 4 yr international optometry student ( but studying optometry school in US). And I just got a position for residency. However, my OPT will be ending before the end of the residency program. I would like to get some opinions about how to work legally during that period. - Do I have to find a sponsor to allow me to get H1B visa before the end of my OPT? - Where can I find a place that provide H1B visa without election? - or is there anyone has similar situation and can... HELP, please! MS3 on Anesthesia vs neurology.
I’m an MS3 at a mid-tier MD. I’ve always been going for anesthesia but now I’m having second thoughts. Honored all pre-clinicals but now that I have 2 kids, third year has been tough and I have all passes except for HP in IM and FM. I have 3 posters and have been working on a case report in anesthesia, another poster project for the ASA, and a random ophtho project that I don’t think will be published in time. I somehow feel like anesthesias has become ultra competitive over the last 2... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Ophthalmology Match Chances
I'll be applying this upcoming cycle. Given how increasingly competitive the ophtho match has become over the past 2 years, I wanted to get a sense of my chances and if I should apply to a backup specialty or do a research year. T20 USMD with home program Step 1: Pass Step 2: 256 Clinical Grades: Honors on almost all core rotations (including IM/surgery) except 1 Research: 4 mid-author publications (2 are ophtho related), 2 ophtho abstracts/posters, currently working on several ophtho... Psychiatry - Do you Forget Medical Knowledge?
I’m very interested in psychiatry, but a huge concern for me is that I won’t remember most of the medical knowledge I’ve learned in med school (this is extremely important to me). Other than that, I really like the specialty. I’m also strongly considering radiology and ophthalmology right now. In terms of the “knowledge” aspect, radiology definitely seems to win. But, each specialty obviously has its own pros and cons and so I’m having a hard time deciding. Would greatly appreciate hearing... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

USC (Keck) vs Northwestern (Feinberg)
Hi everyone! I’m having a hard time deciding between these schools. I’m interested in ophtho/plastics and want to be on the west coast for residency but open to living elsewhere during medical school. Both schools have similar tuition, class size (186 vs 160), grading (both true P/F pre-clinical & H/HP/P/F clerkships), proximity to rotation sites, early integration of clinical experiences and mandatory research projects, and both private and public hospital exposure... What is an opthalmologist's take on an internist doing a funduscopic examination?
Hello. I am a part time nephrologist / Internist who sees a large number of hypertensive and diabetic patients. Although I do send these patients to opthalmology for a formal dilated retinal exam (which is part of the diabetes management anyway), I do have a PanOptic ophthalmoscope which I fiddle around with now and then for someone who is having uncontrolled BP for an undilated exam. It's not where near as good as those retinal photographs in the textbooks, of course. But I have gleaned... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Public notice: stop taking PE jobs
What do all PE practices have in common? They all need employee producers before they can churn and burn the practice to next buyer for that sweet 10x EBITDA multiplier. Ophthalmology is a small field w/ greater than 50% of workforce over 55, and if all young ophthalmologists collectively stuck together and said no to PE jobs, it would be game over. This is already happening to some degree. If young ophthalmologists banded together about tail insurance clauses and asked “partnership... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Are there any clinical trials for dry AMD?
I have a patient who, like others, is really hoping for anything to improve his vision. I told him I’d try and find out if there are any trials he can enroll in. Anyone know of anything? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Any med school supplies you regret buying?
I'll be starting MS1 this summer and I'm trying to plan out my finances. They already told us that we don't have to buy and ophthalmoscope or a otoscope because they'll be provided. We do have to buy scalpels for anatomy lab (my mom is a veterinary assistant so I'll be getting those for free from her clinic). They haven't given us any other guidance so far on what we absolutely need to buy. I already have a macbook air, ipad, and a pencil. Already bought the anki app when I studied for the... Studied for a Month on the OAT- 340 AA/ 350 TS
Hello everyone! I wanted to share my scores and experiences for the OAT as I just took it on February 25th! To preface, I had a little less than a month to prepare (about 25 days) therefore it was extremely important that I try my best to absorb as much information as I possibly can. This, of course, was not easy whatsoever and I would not recommend this strategy to everyone. I would say that studying in a timeline like this only works well if you did a pretty good job in the... Postdoctoral Research Fellow
I have been accepted in a position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow, one in UIC and the other is in Kellogg. I would like to know the pros and cons of each place so that I could choose clearly. Is one place far better than the other or are they comparable? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. (Source: Student Doctor Network)
