Is Ophtho falling from grace?
- Almost half of the work comprehensive ophthos do in clinic could be handled fine by an optometrist + optometrists gaining surgical rights in some states - Low flexibility since most hospitals do not hire ophthos and would rather contract with PP groups (he said this was because they don't generate ancillary income from consults, labs, imaging...etc) + PP groups offering low salaries due to no competition with hospitals - Start up costs are prohibitively high (100,000+ for equipment) and... Switching from optom school to med school
I'm a first-year OD student and am considering switching to med school with the interest of several specialties (of course ophth is included). About me: I'm 33 years old. My undergrad GPA is considerably low (3.16) but I finished my bsc (bio/chem) with a streak of 20 "A's" and several 4.0 semesters. I've continued that trend and am sitting at a 4.0 in optometry school. I scored in the 91st percentile for the OAT and believe I can achieve around a 515 for the MCAT as well. I have a... Oat advice
I am interested to know how my OAT score stacks up against others out there and if I have a chance at optometry schools even with a low overall GPA. QR: 380 RC: 270 BIO:350 GC: 340 OC: 360 PHYS: 400 TS: 380 AA: 350 A bit of background about me: I Graduated in engineering, so that might explain the HIGH physics/QR mark So I am in a situation where I no longer want to do Engineering as a career and would like to pursue Optometry instead, However my GPA from engineering is extremely low (2.5... Question about Contact Lenses
Hello, I have been wearing Acuvue moist with astigmatism daily contacts for the past 2 years now and have had no issues. About 1 month ago I got a new contact lens exam and asked the optometrist for a new brand of contact lens where I can change it once every 2 weeks or so. She prescribed me Avaira vitality toric and after wearing them for a few weeks now my forehead feels a bit tired. I noticed that the contacts are significantly thicker and that maybe the cause of my discomfort. I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Medical Retina Fellowships 2022
Which are the top medical retina fellowship programs? What are key considerations? I know believe some require medical retina fellows to take retina call along with the surgical fellows, while others do not. Any insight into which allow you to continue to operate during fellowship? I've heard some actually allow you to do cataract surgery, which is huge plus for me as I think about maintaining my surgical skills. I would like to have a "comprehensive-plus" practice in the... Do you need to attend a top residency to match retina fellowship?
Hi all, I am a medical student planning on applying to ophthalmology in August 2023. The thing is, I realized I was interested in it late and am in all likelihood going to be applying with a low tier application (unimpressive clinical grades, low amount of research). The only saving grace I have is that I attend a top 10 medical school who says they haven't failed to match anyone into ophtho in the last 10 years. I'm going to try and get as much research as I can, but given the time it... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Late switch letter of recommendation question
MS4 applying anesthesia. I was a late switch (a couple months ago), and the issue is, my application screams ophtho, like dozens of ophtho pubs and leadership. An anesthesia advisor recommended I include a letter from an ophtho mentor to leave no doubt that I am not dual applying. I got to have a glance at the ophtho letter before he submitted, and it is strong but kind of just a regurgitation of my CV and not that personal. I don’t think it serves much purpose other than to reduce the... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Ocularists
Opinion on ocularists? I’m a current opto student with a side passion for art that recently learned about ocularists. Upon further research, I found out it’s a fairly niche group since meticulous art skills are needed + a 5-year apprenticeship (10k hour). In Houston, there’s only 3 and the one I researched is a multi-millionaire/making way more than the average optometrist. Are ocularists battling with tech advancement? Is there any hidden industry secrets that plague this career. I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

OAT Breakdown (370 AA / 380 TS)
I took the OAT last weekend & I wanted to share how I prepared for the test! Reading other people’s breakdowns helped me a TON while I was studying 😊 I gave myself 3 months to study - I was working full time, and I graduated in 2021 so I hadn’t seen a lot of the material for a couple years. For anyone else writing it later than usual, it may seem like a lot to relearn at first but it comes back quick! Study Resources OATBooster (10/10) This was pretty much the only resource I used. Best time to submit application?
Hey everyone, I started working on my application mid July, I already have all my transcripts and letter of recommendations in. I also finished my first draft of my personal statement and I answered all the supplementary questions. So I'd say I got through the application pretty quickly. When would you say is the best time for me to apply and submit my application? I was planning on spending all of August perfecting my write ups. I don't wanna rush it, but I also don't want to submit too... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
