Ophthalmology - slight dip from Step 1 to Step 2, include on SF Match or no?
Say one went from a Step 1 of 268 to a Step 2 of 265, should they include Step 2 in their initial SF Match submission or no? Just wondering if anyone had any insight on this given Step 1 going P/F and programs no longer being able to filter applicants by Step 1 score on the SF Match. They can still filter by Step 2 score as far as I know. Kind of a specific question but I feel like the Step 1 is a bit more impressive (higher %ile) and might be a better "stand alone" score. Retina Salary Surveys; Billing to Bonus Ratio
I have something from 2014, but I'm wondering if anybody has anything more recent for vitreoretinal salaries--ideally from ASRS or AAO. I know that many practice owners easily clear $1 million, and that starting salaries are usually in the $350-$400k range--but am looking for something verified/more official. Also, if anybody knows anything about a typical billing to bonus ratio, that would be great. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Starting point for Optometry
Hi! I will try to keep this short and sweet. I graduated with my B.S. in Bio with a cGPA of 3.0 in December of 2020 I have experience as a scribe, shadowing experience (none with Optometry), volunteering at elementary schools, and plenty of lab tech experience. I currently work as a newborn screening technologist. I have been interested in becoming an optometrist and just need some pointers and guidance on where to start? Or if I even have a good chance with my GPA? If I score a 300+ on the... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Studying Ophthalmology Intern Year
There have been some threads about how to study ophtho, but I'd like to get more opinions, especially since most programs in the country have a 3 month required block PGY-1 year. I'd like to be a bit more prepared for this rotation in October! Some of the resources I've seen mentioned: Kanski's BCSC reading Ophtho OKAP and Board review prep presentations Practical Ophthalmology Can't read them all but what are your thoughts what you'd use to begin? I've started reading Kanski's a bit but... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Optometry and Arkansas
Arkansas is about to allow optometrist to perform injections as well as laser and scalpel surgery. I know this is a hot topic and has been discussed in other threads, but would love your thoughts. Have other states where this is allowed seen optometrists taking advantage of their larger scope? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

When to apply??
Hi, I made a career goal change last semester of my Junior year (dentist --> optometrist) due to unforeseen circumstances. I have already taken the DAT last summer (21 AA, which is ~87th percentile), have about 3.97 GPA, 400+ hours of research, 100+ hours of volunteering (mostly at hospital), and 1 year of working as a TA at my university. I have also taken most pre-requisite courses. Supposing that I will have gained about 50 hours of shadowing an optometrist by August, should I apply by... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is though enough reinvention?
I reapplying this cycle after not getting any interview invites this past cycle because I applied too late last summer (September). I have a 3.6 gpa and 504 MCAT. I'm submitting my primaries in June and added a new rec letter from the optometrist that I worked with over the year. I added on 2000 clinical hours from work and 50 hours shadowing. I'm also applying with a committee letter this time and retaking my MCAT in early August. Would this be enough to improve my chances this time applying? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

If you are having second thoughts on optometry school, I'm here to tell you to RUN
Hi everyone, I wanted to write this post to share my experiences and opinions on being an optometrist. I graduated a few years back and have had the opportunity to work private and corporate and also own my own business. I wanted this to serve as a warning to y'all... Optometry is not it. I repeat, optometry is NOT it. I came into the profession very optimistic and excited since it's been a lifelong dream of mine to be an optometrist. The profession has changed drastically in the last... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
