Misight
So My 12 yo kid was recommended Misight for his nearsightedness. I did some research and almost all recommendations online are from optometrists selling the product (red flag #1). Also, improvement is in the 20-50% range so projection without is -4, and with is -2 to -3. From a practical standpoint, doesn't make much of a difference. Expense is somewhat high too and from what I understand, most of the $$$ goes to the optometrists pocketbook. Talked to our pediatrician, who never heard... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Career change from optometry to pharmacy?
I have already completed my 1st year of optometry school, but now I have been dismissed, so now I am stuck at home for a year with my parents, and I am very unhappy, and crying all the time. I was thinking about changing my career to pharmacy, and I don't know if it's a good idea or not. I do know that I am hard working, and quiet in personality. But I don't have any experience in the field or know too much about it. So I was wondering if anyone could please give me some advice into if... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

waterloo optometry
Hey! On the Waterloo website it says "A minimum of three years of university science are required to apply to the Doctor of Optometry program (the earliest to apply is the summer between second and third year). You need to take six terms with five courses per term (not including labs)." What if I took 1 of those semesters with only 4 courses but same amount of credits? One of the classes I took weighed double the credit so although I took 4, it was still a full-time semester. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Ophthalmologist requiring medical clearance for cataract patients, aargh...
Patient is 93 y.o. undergoing planned cataract extraction. Ophthalmologist ordered medical clearance. We have known for over 40 years that cataract surgery is so low risk that medical conditions that don't involve an inability to lie still don't affect anesthetic risk. How much money is wasted yearly by Medicare for this nonsense? I believe that there should be a push to have this expense come from the surgeon's global fee. That would end the practice in a heartbeat. End of rant. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Oral boards study partner April 2023 - anyone took the orals in October?
I just took the oral boards. Awful. I am going to start studying for the oral boards in April 2023. Ugh. I am open to a study partner and open to various levels of studying together ranging from just keeping on a mutual schedule to closer cooperation. I believe I got the gist of a significant majority of the questions. However, my delivery was awful. It didn't compare with TV newscasters or even other participants in the Osler course. Furthermore, getting the gist of the question doesn't... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Curious to find out why ?
As a practicing optometrist in the Northeast area, I've had the pleasure to examine several students in undergrad and few post-grad who were science majors who took their MCATS, with high GPAs of 3.7-3.8, 3.9, and average to below average MCAT scores from some top Universities in the Northeast over this past year. They came to me for glasses and contact lenses and after the exam, I spoke with each of them in-depth and for a good amount of time. They applied to 30 med schools and not one... MCAT for Optometry School
Hi everyone, i originally took the MCAT for medical school applications but found my interest in optometry after shadowing. I don’t want to go to med school anymore and i’m set on optometry 100%. I was wondering if it’s a disadvantage to apply with an MCAT score instead of OAT? I have a 514 MCAT score and a 4.0 gpa. Over 100 hours shadowing multiple optometry places and working as a technician for the past 4 months. I’m interested in applying to UCB, SCCO, Western, and AZCOPT. I believe all...
