Apply Today! Minority Ophthalmology Mentoring
Public health evidence highlights that access to care, as well as the patient experience improves when the physician community reflects the population at large. Because eye disease disproportionately affects communities of color, increasing diversity in ophthalmology is especially important. Minority Ophthalmology Mentoring aims to increase diversity in ophthalmology by helping students who are underrepresented in medicine (UIM) become competitive ophthalmology residency applicants.  Are... Questions for those in private practice
For those of you ophthalmologists who are private practice owners or even those working for PE practices, if your practice has an optical gallery and/or dispenses contact lenses, what EHR system are you using? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Private equity starting salary
I just received a verbal offer from a PE-owned practice and I was a little surprised at how low the base salary was (anterior seg, first job after fellowship, mid-sized city in the central US). I feel like it would be a competitive starting salary in a private practice, but I was under the impression base salaries were higher in PE due to the inability to attain partnership/equity and thus an overall lower earning ceiling. Curious what kind of offers people have received from PE and what... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Speciality choice
Greetings, I am IMG graduate, and my passion has always leaned towards fields involving surgical intervention such as Surgery, OBGYN, or Ophthalmology. However, when it came time to apply for residencies, the prevailing trend among my IMG graduate peers was Internal Medicine due to its high acceptance rate. Consequently, I pursued Internal Medicine and completed my residency a few years ago. I have since been working as a hospitalist, but I find little satisfaction in this practice. Now, in... Applying Ophthalmology- do I have a red flag
Alright y'all I'm worried I'm applying to Ophtho this year, interviews went out last week (about 1/2 the programs have sent them out) and I have been getting crickets with no interviews at all. I'm worried I have a red flag in my app that I don't know about, or maybe I don't have a chance? Possible red flags?? -Step 2: 242, not great -Med school is pass/ fail ONLY until fourth year, so no chance to honor any rotations in my third year -no AOA, but again med school is pass/ fail, AOA is... How can I decide early between multiple competitive specialties? (ortho, ENT, ophtho)
I’m an MS1, and I didn’t realize how medical specialty selection worked before only a few months ago. I didn’t realize how competitive some of them were and how you need to start doing research in that specialty specifically and applying to programs in that specialty really, really early. I know people advise to start early with the most competitive specialty that you’re interested in so that you can change afterwards, but I’m interested in 3 really different and very competitive... How do I strengthen my application?
Hello! I am currently in my undergrad (c/o 2026) and I’m starting to get very scared for when it comes time to apply for vet school in two-three years (my IS is UC Davis). What can I do to strengthen my stats besides more veterinary hours (which I know I need). I’m also lacking in animal hours I believe. Cum. GPA: 3.84 (Science gpa about 3.6) Veterinary Hours: 60 Hours small animal internship (hs) 8 Hours assisting ophthalmology surgery (intern) 50 Hours Equine Medical Center intern Animal... What else to ask for in contract negotiations
Do you all have any suggestions for additional clauses to include in your contract during negotiations? Anything you wish you had negotiated or added? Any unique "asks"? I'm aware to always negotiate non competes, salary, partnership details etc but just curious if there were some other ideas. Thanks!!! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What are my chances?
Hi everyone! I recently graduated with a Bachelors in Biology. During my time in college, I classified myself as pre-health and learned as much as I could about all the possible careers within healthcare. Recently, I have been more drawn to optometry and was wondering what my chances would be. I took the MCAT in August of this year and scored a 502. My undergraduate GPA is 3.65 and my science GPA is 3.5. I have been a medical assistant for about 2.5 years now and I am also an Adjunct... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Too late to go back for second fellowship?
I finished a medical retina fellowship in 2020. Have been practicing for three years now and I just really dislike it. I always intended to pursue a surgical fellowship afterward (I did this subspecialty because it was easier to access and we prioritised my husband’s fellowship placement at the time) but when covid hit my husband (also an ophthalmologist) and I moved home and started working. I just find it to be very dissatisfying. Is it too late to go back and do an oculoplastics... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

EMRs
I'm curious if anyone feels particularly strong about their EMR. I've looked at Modernizing Medicine, Compulink, Nextech, and NextGen for a small practice needing EMR/PM software for both the clinic and practice management (no optical shop). There are a lot of options, and each EMR has its strengths and weaknesses. Would anyone be willing to comment on what they like and don't like about their EMR? Thank you! Private equity owned fellowships
I'm specifically applying for surgical retina this year, but probably applies to fellowships broadly. I've asked around in academia and no one is sure what to say. There are some great retina fellowships out there that have been acquired by PE in the last couple of years. How do you think PE affects fellowship training? Personally I imagine clinic might run more efficiency? Not sure how it would change surgical numbers. Would appreciate any insight (Source: Student Doctor Network)
