Cataract & Refractive Surgery Fellowship - Cleveland Eye Clinic/Clear Choice Custom LASIK Center
Hello Cataract, Refractive, & Anterior Segment surgery fellow applicants! I want to provide an introduction and update for the amazing one-year cataract and refractive surgery fellowship at the Cleveland Eye Clinic and Clear Choice Custom LASIK Center with William Wiley, MD and Shamik Bafna, MD in Cleveland, OH. I am the former (recently graduated) fellow (2021-2022) and had a fantastic year in Cleveland – the fellowship was truly fulfilling and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

2022 oat breakdown 390 aa// 400 ts
I would like to speak about my experience studying for the OAT as reading these breakdowns was helpful to me when I was preparing. I do want to preface this breakdown by saying that I sacrificed a lot this summer for the test, and gave more time to it than I normally even give to schoolwork (3.97 GPA entering fourth year in Biological Sciences.) Study material that I used: OATbooster: I used this source for probably 90% of my preparation. If I were to recommend any one source, it... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Vabysmo
For those of us who have been spoiled and been using pre-filled Eylea syringes, what syringe are you using for Vabysmo? Are you using a silicone free one? Those options seem to be limited. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Help on School List: CA ORM, 3.6/518
Undergrad: top state school, cGPA 3.63, BCPM GPA 3.56 (quite a big significant upward trend after soph year) MCAT- 518; hopefully getting my foot in the door somewhere. Not much to say here just got lucky. ECs: decent amount of clinical hours (~900, ~1300 by matriculation) at ophtho clinic and pediatric urgent care, research hours (~1370, ~2600 by matriculation, no pubs) all from my gap year. Non-clinical volunteering hours ~2000 from variety of church (although starting from high school)... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is the "partnership track" dead?
I hope it isn't true but over the last few years, it seems most partnership tracks are highly flawed, unfair, and eventually lead to nowhere. The outcome is arguably as bad or worse than private equity employment with many tracks leading to that anyway with no recourse. In ophthalmology, what makes a "fair" partnership track? Should the salary be "market rate" employment or is it justifiably lower since the associate is paying "sweat equity"? Isn't that what good will pays for? "Is it... Do I HAVE to get disability insurance?
I know disability insurance is important and that you can't predict what could happen in your life and to your health. Most attendings have told me to get it (except one radiologist I know who said it's not necessary until later in life when I have a family to feed). But just wondering if there are people out there that didn't get it, and what was your reasoning? I really don't want to get it but I just feel so pressured. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Transferring to Yale's Medical school
I (MS1) am attending a state medical school and I noticed that my school has low (and lower quality) match rates for ophthalmology compared to Yale. I am fairly set on ophthalmology and have been doing research in the field for years now. Are research opportunities and residency match good enough reasons for Yale to accept me as a transfer student? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Which optometry schools require mock exams before letting students take the Board Exams?
Hello everyone! I am applying this cycle and wonder if any of you know about this topic. I am ranking some optometry schools, and one of my advisors tell me that some optometry schools require students to pass some mock exams before letting students take the Board Exams. I wouldn't say I like this idea and want to avoid such schools. My school list is UOH, UIW, NECO, MCPHS, Berkeley, and SCCO. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Am I considered a reapplicant?
I submitted the OPTOMCAS app to NECO last year (2021-2022) but the app was undelivered b/c of a transcript error. I ultimately decided not to fix the transcript error because I felt that it wasn't the best time for me to apply so the OPTOMCAS app was never verified. Would I still be considered a reapplicant if I submit to NECO this year? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Why is ophthalmology so competitive in 2022?
Ophtho is one of the most competitive specialties, but why? This is not meant as a dig at all -- I'm simply a medical student trying to make a more informed choice. I hope this does not rub someone the wrong way. Compensation is SO low. I used to believe MGMA/national data, but after having talks with several attendings and residents who signed new contracts, the average is simply NOT 350k. In academic positions (which is what I’m leaning right now), most comprehensive attendings at my... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Should I TA?
I told myself I would only tutor and not spend my limited time as a TA. I was hand-picked from our accelerated summer program (10 of us) to TA a lab (clinical skills) this fall for my fellow second years. The position would be once / week at $15 / hr (2 hours / week). Do you think having TA experience will add value to my resume upon graduation? I'm looking for leverage to help negotiate a higher starting salary once finished with school or be a candidate for a competitive/coveted... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Your Eye Specialists Cornea, Refractive, and Glaucoma Fellowship
I wanted to post a review for Your Eye Specialists (YES) Cornea, Refractive, and Glaucoma Fellowship after I completed the fellowship a few weeks ago. It was an exceptional year with excellent surgical training and broad clinical pathology. You will spend most of your time with Drs. Aarup and Anup Kubal (brothers) and Dr. Anil Vedula. They are all fantastic surgeons, mentors, and friends. I not only learned a ton, but I really enjoyed working with them each day. They truly want you to... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Matching into competitive specialty in desirable location from low tier MD
Hi all, I just started med school at a low-tier US MD near a large city with prestigious med schools. I'm interested in competitive specialities (ophtho, ENT, derm, rad). My school has home programs in all of these but they take like 1-2 students MAX every year. I looked at the match list for the most recent years and it looks like most students who do end up matching into competitive specialities end up in less desirable locations. I would really like to be back home in CA or in a large... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
