Chance to match Ophtho and recommendations on what to do
I am considering applying to Ophtho. I was wondering if anyone here has any insight on my chances of successfully matching. I just finished an Ophtho elective and was beyond impressed with the field, and now I’m kind of in free fall due to the time constraint. Background: I’m currently an M3 (at a MD T20 if that matters) and I was originally going to do ENT M1 during COVID’s ZOOM SOM. Realized I hated it once I actually had the opportunity to get in there and scrub, so I switched to... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

ASC and young ophthalmologists
Listened to a great podcast episode on Ophthalmology off the Grid this morning regarding ASC ownership. Was wondering if any experienced ophthalmologists can shed light on contract negotiation strategies for graduating residents or fellows. If the candidate is interested in partnership, ASC, real estate, etc. is it good to communicate that upfront with the understanding it is contingent upon satisfactory performance? For those of you who are owners, how does that style of communication... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Publication opportunity in ophthalmology - For students with background in engineering
Hi everyone, my name is Dr. Wu, resident-physician in ophthalmology. I am looking for students to work on a review paper on retinal prosthesis/artificial retina (i.e. bionic eyes). This paper will be published in a peer-reviewed journal (IF 3.85), and the publication is almost guaranteed, since we were directly invited by the editor to write the article. Our review paper will be on the use of retinal implantable sensors and devices in assisting patients with severe retinal... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

NECO vs CCO for Canadian student.
Hey there, I am a Canadian student who recently got accepted to both NECO and CCO. I'm having tough time deciding which school is better overall (i.e. passing rates, class schedules, rent, traveling accommodations, clinic time, etc.). Can you guys give me some pros and cons for each of these schools? Thank you! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Finding ophtho research
Any advice for how to find ophtho research for an OMS-1. Should I try and find residents that are in local area and email them to see if they have anything to write up? or email local uni optho research departments? or local private practices? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Top 10 Surgical Retina Fellowships
Things change fast. A decade or two ago, residents were advised that only a smattering of 10 vitreoretinal surgery fellowship programs were considered worth going to. More recently, a more palatable truth seems to have emerged: there are so many amazing programs, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. That being said, the last thread that attempted to rank surgical retina programs was started in 2014. We all need an update. After heavy editing of this list along with several... I stick needles in eyes - AMA
Vitreoretinal surgeon here. The clickbait title is due to most medical students having almost zero exposure to ophthalmology, much less subspecialty ophthalmology. I have a pretty cool and rewarding job, so have at it. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Transitional year vs research year for IMGs aiming for ophthalmology
Hi everyone! I’m a final year med student in Taiwan and my wife is a licensed MD in Taiwan. We both aim to pursue a career as an ophthalmologist in the States and are very concerned about our situations. As IMGs, doing a transitional year sounds amazing to us as it provides us with the opportunity to familiarize ourselves with the US healthcare system and hopefully also get hands-on opportunities in ophthalmology at the same time. However, we have heard that doing a TY could be a red flag... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Salus (PCO) Interview Offer
Hey everyone, I was hoping to get some advice on this. I just got invited for an interview with Salus University, but I am also preparing to retake the OAT on December 5th. My current test score is not very competitive (290 AA) and I feel like best case scenario I will be placed on hold if I interview without the new scores. Based on this, I have the following 2 questions: 1. Would you guys suggest arranging the interview ASAP or a day or two after I retake the OAT (so I can provide... Outside perspective - job market
Hi all, random ophthalmologist here. As promised in the job postings thread, here are the differences in our markets which I find interesting. Absolutely nothing posted here is to brag on me or demean you, or vice versa. I post this, again, as an outside perspective because I think these are reasonable guidelines for initial contracts. For reference, I'm a private practice partner in a subspecialty practice. I think our market environment/psychology is more conducive to happy employment, so... What is the better research opportunity?
Hey guys! I just posted this on the medical school reddit as a poll but no one is commenting. I cold emailed doctors over the break and have an opportunity to do research an hour away in state where they have have a great ophtho residency/fellowship program and could start spring of my M1 and do more work over the summer. I could also apply to out of state optho research internships and possibly expand my OOS network with high probability of getting a guaranteed pub/presentation over the... Hated everything third year...what specialty should I choose?
Unfortunately, I genuinely don't think I enjoy medicine. I figure at this point I just need to choose something with a good balance of lifestyle and pay that I can tolerate. Ophtho is on the table as those surgeries were pretty interesting to me when I got to watch, but I honestly don't enjoy clinic. Rads is on the table because of the complete separation from patient interaction, but I have no idea if I'd be bored looking at grayscale scans all day. I would have to take a research year for...
