Expansion of Neisseria meningitidis Serogroup C Clonal Complex 10217 during Meningitis Outbreak, Burkina Faso, 2019
Emerg Infect Dis. 2024 Mar;30(3):460-468. doi: 10.3201/eid3003.221760.ABSTRACTDuring January 28-May 5, 2019, a meningitis outbreak caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C (NmC) occurred in Burkina Faso. Demographic and laboratory data for meningitis cases were collected through national case-based surveillance. Cerebrospinal fluid was collected and tested by culture and real-time PCR. Among 301 suspected cases reported in 6 districts, N. meningitidis was the primary pathogen detected; 103 cases were serogroup C and 13 were serogroup X. Whole-genome sequencing revealed that 18 cerebrospinal fluid specimens tested posit...

Effect of Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine on Pneumonia Incidence Rates among Children 2-59 Months of Age, Mongolia, 2015-2021
Emerg Infect Dis. 2024 Mar;30(3):490-498. doi: 10.3201/eid3003.230864.ABSTRACTStarting in June 2016, the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) was introduced into the routine immunization program of Mongolia by using a 2+1 dosing schedule, phased by district. We used prospective hospital surveillance to evaluate the vaccine's effect on pneumonia incidence rates among children 2-59 months of age over a 6-year period. Of 17,607 children with pneumonia, overall adjusted incidence rate ratios showed decreased primary endpoint pneumonia, very severe pneumonia, and probable pneumococcal pneumonia until June 2021. Resu...

The Diversity of Neurological Complications Associated with Herpes Zoster: A Retrospective Case Series of 26 Patients
Conclusion This study revealed that VZV-related neurological complications are heterogeneous, commonly leading to severe disability and poor outcomes, and that neurological phenotypes and outcomes are related to the distribution of herpes zoster.PMID:38403768 | DOI:10.2169/internalmedicine.3047-23 (Source: Herpes)

From Qualitative Research to Quantitative Preference Elicitation: An Example in Invasive Meningococcal Disease
ConclusionWillingness to be vaccinated against IMD was affected by vaccine attributes but largely insensitive to IMD incidence and severity. This article provides an example of how to apply the recent reporting guidelines for qualitative developmental work in preference studies, with 21 out of 22 items in the guidelines being considered. Epidemiology and Clinical Outcomes of Bacterial Meningitis in Children and Adults in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
AbstractPurpose of ReviewDespite the availability of effective vaccines against the three primary pathogens (Streptococcus pneumoniae,Haemophilus influenzae type b, andNeisseria meningitidis) that cause bacterial meningitis, this condition remains a significant cause of morbidity, neurologic sequelae, and mortality among children and adults living in low-income and middle-income countries.Recent FindingsBacterial meningitis represents a significant public health challenge for national and global health systems. Since vaccine-preventable meningitis remains highly prevalent in low-income and middle-income countries, the Worl...

Neisseria gonorrhoeae lipooligosaccharide glycan epitopes recognized by bactericidal IgG antibodies elicited by the meningococcal group B-directed vaccine, MenB-4C
IntroductionOuter membrane vesicles (OMVs) of Neisseria meningitidis in the group B-directed vaccine MenB-4C (BexseroR) protect against infections with Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The immunological basis for protection remains unclear. N. meningitidis OMV vaccines generate human antibodies to N. meningitidis and N. gonorrhoeae lipooligosaccharide (LOS/endotoxin), but the structural specificity of these LOS antibodies is not defined.MethodsTen paired human sera obtained pre- and post-MenB-4C immunization were used in Western blots to probe N. meningitidis and N. gonorrhoeae LOS. Post-MenB-4C sera (7v5, 19v5, and 17v5), represent...

Safety, tolerability and immunogenicity of a novel 24-valent pneumococcal vaccine in toddlers: A phase 1 randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: In 12-15-month-old toddlers, a single dose of Pn-MAPS24v showed an acceptable safety profile, regardless of dose level; AEs were reported at similar frequencies by Pn-MAPS24v and PCV13 recipients. Pn-MAPS24v elicited IgG and OPA responses to all common and most unique serotypes. These results support further clinical evaluation in infants.PMID:38360475 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.02.001 (Source: Vaccine)
