Oregano and/or Marjoram: Traditional Oil Production and Ethnomedical Utilization of Origanum Species in southern Turkey
In this study, traditional oil production and ethnomedical utilization of plant products are presented from the Antalya region in southern Turkey. The native people harvest species from wild populations and air-dry them under the sun. They consume and sell mainly air-dried Origanum onites (Turkish oregano) leaves. They obtain essential oil traditionally by steam distillation from Origanum majorana (white marjoram) due to its high oil yield. The native people use dried plant material and essential oil to cure various diseases such as cough, chronic cold, wounds, gastrointestinal disorders and skin problems in humans as well...

Marjoram Extract Down-regulates the Expression of Pasteurella multocida Adhesion, Colonization and Toxin genes: a Potential Mechanism for its Antimicrobial activity
This study provides an in vitro research framework to investigate the antibacterial activities of 5 herbal (marjoram, garlic, onion, cinnamon and black seed) extracts against 16 multidrug-resistant and virulent P. multocida serogroup A isolates recovered from dead and clinically diseased rabbits. Pathogenicity of the screened isolates was further proven experimentally and was verified by PCR analyses of 5 randomly selected virulence genes encoding attachment and colonization proteins (ptfA, pfhA, and omp87), sialidases (nanB) and dermonecrotoxin (toxA). A total of 12 P. multocida isolates were highly pathogenic with the po...

Voltammetric determination of carvacrol on Boron Doped Diamond Electrode.
Abstract A simple, sensitive and rapid method of carvacrol determination using Boron Doped Diamond Electrode (BDDE) and Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV) was described. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first presentation of electrochemical method to determine this compound on BDDE. In presented conditions, carvacrol undergoes irreversible one-electron oxidation controlled by diffusion. The measurement conditions and composition of supporting electrolyte were developed and optimized. Optimal measurement parameters were achieved using 0.1 molL-1 acetate buffer pH 6.0 as supporting electrolyte. Th...

Carvacrol induces mitochondria ‐mediated apoptosis via disruption of calcium homeostasis in human choriocarcinoma cells
In this study, we demonstrated that carvacrol exertes antiproliferative effects through suppression of phosphoinositide 3 ‐kinase–protein kinase B and mitogen‐activated protein kinase signaling, generating oxidative stress and altering calcium homeostasis mediated by mitochondrial dysfunction in human choriocarcinoma JAR and JEG3 cells. Therefore, carvacrol has a possibility as a novel therapeutic agent or supple ment for the treatment of choriocarcinoma patients. Carvacrol is a monoterpenoid phenol present in the oils of various plants includingOriganum vulgare (oregano) orOriganum majorana (marjoram). For a long ti...

Cytotoxicity of the Aqueous Extract and Organic Fractions from Origanum majorana on Human Breast Cell Line MDA-MB-231 and Human Colon Cell Line HT-29.
Authors: Makrane H, El Messaoudi M, Melhaoui A, El Mzibri M, Benbacer L, Aziz M Abstract The toxicity of the aqueous extract of Origanum majorana was tested (5 and 10 g/kg) in albino mice. No symptoms of toxicity or mortality were observed. The mice survived being active and healthy during all 14 days of observation. In addition, the weight measurement of the left and right kidneys, heart, and liver shows no significant difference between the control, 5 g/kg, and 10 g/kg. All extracts (aqueous, petroleum ether, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, methanolic, and depleted aqueous extracts) of Origanum maj...

The antibacterial and physiological effects of pure and nanoencapsulated Origanum majorana essential oil on fish infected with Aeromonas hydrophila
This study evaluated the antibacterial activity of Origanum majorana essential oil (EOM) and nanocapsules of this oil (NOM) in silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen, infected with Aeromonas hydrophila, and addressed their effects on silver catfish hematological and metabolic parameters. Fish were inoculated with A. hydrophila (360 μL, at a concentration of 1.5 × 109 CFU mL−1) and submitted to 1 h daily baths with EOM (0 (control), 20 or 30 μL L−1), NOM (0 (control), 5 or 10 μL L−1) or a positive control containing florfenicol (30 μL L−1) called group Maxflor® for five consecutive days. All tr...

Chemical composition, antioxidant activity and antifungal effects of five Iranian essential oils against Candida strains isolated from urine samples
This study reported the chemical composition, antioxidant and anti-Candida activity of Origanum majorana, Artemisia dracunculus, Cymbopogon citrate, Cinnamomum verum and Caryophyllus aromaticus essential oils. Different Candida species, from urine tracts of hospitalized patients, were included to be challenged with understudied essential oils. Chemical compositions were determined using gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (GC/MS) analysis and antioxidant activity was measured using DDPH assay. MIC of these essential oils was evaluated using broth micro-dilution test. Caryophyllus aromaticus had the highest antioxidant act...
