Breast arterial calcification is associated with sarcopenia in peri- and post-menopausal women
Breast arterial calcification (BAC) refers to medial calcium deposition in breast arteries and is detectable via mammography. Sarcopenia, which is characterised by low skeletal muscle mass and quality, is associated with several serious clinical conditions, increased morbidity, and mortality. Both BAC and sarcopenia share common pathologic pathways, including ageing, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease. Therefore, this study evaluated the relationship between BAC and sarcopenia as a potential indicator of sarcopenia. (Source: Clinical Imaging)

Secondary neoplasm to non-hodgkin lymphoma treatment manifesting as a cancer of unknown primary: the first case in literature
CONCLUSION: This case suggests that cancer patients who received chemical or radiological treatment should be screened more carefully on the long term as it is possible to developed secondary neoplasms without a primary tumour in areas difficult to diagnose with traditional screening tools.PMID:38576933 | PMC:PMC10990406 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001881 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Application of deep learning on mammographies to discriminate between low and high-risk DCIS for patient participation in active surveillance trials
Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) can progress to invasive breast cancer, but most DCIS lesions never will. Therefore, four clinical trials (COMET, LORIS, LORETTA, AND LORD) test whether active surveillance for ... (Source: Cancer Imaging)

A novel machine learning model for breast cancer detection using mammogram images
AbstractThe most fatal disease affecting women worldwide now is breast cancer. Early detection of breast cancer enhances the likelihood of a full recovery and lowers mortality. Based on medical imaging, researchers from all around the world are developing breast cancer screening technologies. Due to their rapid progress, deep learning algorithms have caught the interest of many in the field of medical imaging. This research proposes a novel method in mammogram image feature extraction with classification and optimization using machine learning in breast cancer detection. The input image has been processed for noise removal...

AI analytics can be used as imaging biomarkers for predicting invasive upgrade of ductal carcinoma in situ
ConclusionThe AI-CAD score was an independent predictor of invasive upgrade for DCIS. Higher AI-CAD scores, especially in the highest quartile of ≥ 75%, can be used as an objective imaging biomarker to predict invasive upgrade in DCIS diagnosed with percutaneous biopsy.Critical relevance statementNoninvasive imaging features including the quantitative results of AI-CAD for mammography interpretation were independent predictors of invasive upgrade in lesions initially diagnosed as ductal carcinoma in situ via percutaneous biopsy and therefore may help decide the direction of surgery before treatment.Key points• Predicti...

Hormone therapy in women with benign breast disease – What little is known and suggestions for clinical implementation
Benign breast disease encompasses a spectrum of non-malignant conditions within the breast, characterized by variations in both histological features and clinical manifestations. These conditions can be categorized into non-proliferative lesions, proliferative lesions without atypia, and proliferative lesions with atypia, each of which carries differing degrees of risk for future breast cancer development. The increased utilization of screening mammography has notably contributed to the rising detection of these lesions over the years [1]. (Source: Maturitas)

Systematic review and meta-analysis of prognostic characteristics for breast cancers in populations with digital versus film mammography indicate the transition may have increased both early detection and overdiagnosis
CONCLUSION: The increased detection of all grades of DCIS and invasive cancer may indicate both increased early detection of more aggressive disease and increased overdiagnosis.FUNDING: Australian National Health and Medical Research Council and the National Breast Cancer Foundation.REGISTRATION: PROSPERO 2017:CRD42017070601.PMID:38570078 | DOI:10.1016/j.jclinepi.2024.111339 (Source: Clinical Breast Cancer)

Association of breast cancer with quantitative mammographic density measures for women receiving contrast-enhanced mammography
JNCI Cancer Spectr. 2024 Apr 2:pkae026. doi: 10.1093/jncics/pkae026. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWomen with high mammographic density (MD) have an increased risk of breast cancer. They may be offered contrast-enhanced mammogram (CEM) to improve breast cancer screening performance. Using a cohort of women receiving CEM, we evaluated whether conventional and modified MD measures were associated with breast cancer. Sixty-six cases with newly diagnosed unilateral breast cancer were frequency-matched on age to 133 cancer-free controls. On low-energy cranio-caudal CEMs (equivalent to standard mammogram), we measured quantitati...

Breast adiposity: Menopausal status impact and its influence on glycemic and anthropometric metabolic parameters
CONCLUSION: The BA was related to different adverse body composition and metabolic factors in women in postmenopause. The results suggest that there might be a relevant BrAT endocrine role during menopause, whose mechanisms are yet to be clarified, which thus opens up research perspectives on the subject as well as on clinical settings.PMID:38558168 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgae205 (Source: The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism)
